“If you could choose one
company at which to begin
your career, which one would
it be?” The question was
answered by 50,000 young
Brazilians, including university
students and young grads, ages
17-28, as part of the survey
“The Companies of Youth’s
Dreams,” elaborated by the
consulting firm Cia. de Talentos.
The company is a reference
in Latin America due to the
partnerships and consulting
projects geared toward this
public.
For the first time, the
Odebrecht Organization

DISCUSSING SUSTAINABLE RENEWABLE ENERGY
Among the public present at the International
Hydroelectricity Conference were Henrique Valladares,
Business Leader at Odebrecht Energia, Márcio
Zimmermann, Executive Secretary of the Brazilian Ministry
of Mines and Energy, representatives of the Itaipu
Eletrobrás Energy Research Company (EPE) and public and
private companies from the sector.
During the opening session, Henrique Valladares spoke
about the conference’s main theme and the company’s
commitment to sustainability. He also highlighted the new
paradigms established with the construction of the Santo
Antônio Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) in Rondônia.
During his lecture, Gabriel Azevedo addressed the
topic of Ecological Flows and participated in a panel with
national and international specialists.
first construction company
to adopt the protocol. “Our
participation represents a
differential with relation to the
company’s commitment to
sustainability and encourages our
equipment and service suppliers
to do the same,” said Gabriel
Azevedo, Sustainability Director at
Odebrecht Energia.
According to Azevedo, other
companies should also adopt the
protocol over the next three years,
since the work of the IHA is still in
the initial phase. “The new tool will
boost the reliability and credibility
of our work,” he said. Azevedo
also pointed out that many of the
measures that should be followed
have already been adopted by
the company: “Sustainability is
inherent to the Organization,”
he said. “We are forerunners
in sustainable management
processes at large hydroelectric
developments.”
Also included in the event
programming, there was a June
19 tour of some 40 conference
participants from different
countries to the Santo Antônio
HPP construction project,
accompanied by leaders from
Odebrecht Energia.

On July 5, the construction site of the Santo
Antônio Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) served
as stage to an event that marks one of the most
important phases of its construction: the bypass
of the Madeira River, a decisive phase for energy
generation, estimated to begin in December of
this year, with the operation of the first turbine.

Director of the Odebrecht Organization,
Henrique Valladares, Business Leader at
Odebrecht Energia, Eduardo de Melo Pinto,
President of the Santo Antônio Energia
Concessionaire, and Flávio Machado Filho,
Institutional Vice President of Andrade
Gutierrez.
In a speech given to an audience formed
by local leaders, executives and 500
Members, Rousseff reaffirmed the Brazilian
Federal Government’s commitment to
investing in hydroelectric plants and
highlighted the development headed
by Odebrecht Energia in this context.
“The Santo Antônio plant is a project that
guarantees energy for Brazil to continue
growing and generating development,”
she said.
The president also emphasized
the importance of the hydroelectric
development as a source of clean and
renewable energy and recalled that
solar energy and wind energy serve
as complementary sources: “Both
solar as well as wind energy are also
complementary energies, since they do
not guarantee the country’s development
and social inclusion and do not sustain
energy production,” she said. “The
Santo Antônio Hydroelectric Power
Plant represents a commitment to the
Brazilian environment and to sustainable
development.”
The number of work opportunities
generated by the project was another
point cited by President Rousseff.

Program - Acreditar (“Believe").
Edison Lobão emphasized that the energy
generated by the plant will be sufficient to
supply 40 million Brazilians or 11 million
homes in the country each day.
Henrique Valladares mentioned the
company's pride at leading one of the
most important construction projects in
the Brazilian electricity sector. “Odebrecht
Energia’s participation in a development the
size of the Santo Antônio plant reinforces our
experience and capacity to deliver projects
ahead of time,” he said.
The bypass of the Madeira River will allow
for the sealing of the river bed in order to
construct and install the generator groups
and begin filling the reservoir, thereby
making it possible to start the turbine
testing phase.
The launch of the spillway gate panels,
necessary to begin conducting the final
commissioning tests, and the release for the
definitive operation of the gates, were also
important phases completed in the project.
THE PROCESS UNTIL THE BYPASS
The work for the first phase of the Madeira
River bypass began on March 15 of this year,
with the start of filling, through siphons, of
the upstream area of the spillway.
The phase following the controlled
flooding was that of the removal, by
dredging of the upstream cofferdam (a

temporary structure) – a temporary dike that
protected the spillway for the entry of water
from the Madeira River. At the same time,
there was the removal of the downstream
cofferdam, also allowing for the flooding
of the site. The dredging of part of the
igapó forest (vegetation characteristic of
the Amazon region located near rivers and
similar to marshland) along the stretch of the
spillway restitution channel was part of the
first phase of the process.
The removal of the two cofferdams marked
the official start of the river bypass process.
On July 5, President Rousseff activated the
device that opened the gates of the main
spillway, located along the left bank of the
Madeira River, allowing water to pass through
the structure.
The occasion also marked the launch of
a rock to construct the cofferdam along
the right bank that will close the river
bed, bypassing the water to the spillway.
This will allow the bed to receive the
construction work for the power house that
will hold the last bulb turbines for the Santo
Antônio HPP.

was a great change in my
life,” said Carlos Deolino,

Producers’ Cooperative
(COOPALM) for five years,
he shares his life story, an
example of courage and
perseverance.
At age 18, unsatisfied
with his work as a logger,
he moved from Bahia to
São Paulo. In the new
city, Deolino experienced
many hardships. After
six years, the farmer
returned to his native
city and began planting
heart of palm. However,
without technical
support, the profit on the
production was taken by
the middlemen, who sold
the products.
In 2006, his life began
to change when he
became a cooperative
member. “I began
receiving quality
monitoring from the
technicians and had all
the necessary support,”
recalled Deolino.
Currently, Deolino has
two hectares of heart of
palm and is a member
of the cooperative’s
Board of Directors. “I see
COOPALM as one big
family,” he said.
COOPERATIVISM AND
FAMILY FARMING
Deolino’s story shows
that family farming is an
activity that recognizes
small producers as rural
entrepreneurs and that
cooperativism represents
a social organization that
is focused on collective

The Odebrecht Engineering and
Construction companies came in at seventh
place for the 6th Edition of the 2011 Ranking of
Brazilian Transnationals, held each year by the
Dom Cabral Foundation (FDC) International
Business Center.
Under the theme “Growth and Sustainable
Management Abroad,” the ranking presents
the sustainability in global operations and
stakeholder management abroad by Brazilian
transnational companies. The study shows the
movements and performance of companies
in the international market in 2010 and
the perspectives for continuing with the
internationalization process.
The methodology used was the United
Nations Conference on Trade and
Development (UNCTAD) Transnationality
Index, which allows for comparative analyses
with similar studies conducted in other
countries by business schools that are
partners of FDC. Three business indicators
were evaluated, which together, make up
the internationalization grade of Brazilian
companies: revenues, assets and number of
Members.
On the list of the 20 Largest by Revenues
Abroad, Odebrecht places sixth, with 36.7%
of its revenues earned outside the country of
origin, and in the ranking of the 20 Largest
by Assets Abroad, the company occupied the
10th position, with 25.8% of its assets located
abroad. Among the 20 Largest by Employees
Abroad, the company comes in at eighth
place, with 35.6% of its Members located
outside Brazil.
Odebrecht in the 2011 Ranking of Brazilian Transnationals
In July, Mercado Magazine disclosed the
2011 edition of the ranking “One Thousand

Argentinean Economy,” with the 1,000
companies that most stood out in the
country last year and the lists of leading
companies per sector.
For the second consecutive year, Odebrecht
occupies first place in the Construction
sector ranking. The company is also among
the top 100 companies with the highest
profits in 2010.

Infraestrutura in Vitória, Espírito Santo. With a
degree in Business Administration, the youth
came to work at the construction site through a
partnership between the project and the student
organization AIESEC to promote professional and
cultural exchange between nations.
“When I arrived to Brazil, I spoke no Portuguese
and had to adapt to the work, the people, the
language and the new culture,” said López, who will
remain the country until the end of 2011. “During
the first three months, I absorbed everything that I
could to perform my work in the best way possible,”
she said.
Rafael Rios, Administrative and Financial
Manager, explained that the alliance was
established for a range of different factors: “At the
same time in which the professional from another
country brings with him/her different cultural
aspects, we participate in his/her professional and
personal development,” said Rios. According to
Rios, in addition to holding the foreign exchange
programs, the companies can take advantage
of the AIESEC network, which is made up of
university students from different countries to
attract youth with high potential. “We improved
our image among this public and presented the
Organization’s 2020 Vision,” he said.
After seven months living and working in Vitória,
Ana López states that she feels integrated. “After
learning the language, everything flowed better,”
she said. “I feel integrated and happy that I can
work at a company that gives me opportunities to
grow as a professional.”

The La Candelaria biodigester was inaugurated on June 14 and is contributing toward meat production in the region
Contributing toward the Development of Renewable Energies in Argentina
In partnership with the La
Candelaria City Government,
IBS Córdoba S.A. – a company
specializing in environmental
services –, with the National
Agricultural Technology
Institute (INTA), and with
BTU, its program partner,
Odebrecht Engenharia
Industrial installed a
biodigester at the city’s
Municipal Slaughterhouse,
located in the Province of
Salta, in Argentina, near the
installed Compressor Plant
as part of the country’s Gas
Pipeline Expansion Project.
The biodigester uses
anaerobic bacteria to
generate clean energy
(biogas), helping improve
meat production conditions.
The equipment eliminates
the use of wood as fuel and
the former waste burning
process, thereby preventing
air and soil contamination,
and reuses animal waste to
generate methane gas as an
alternative energy, and hot
water for the producers.
The potential for
biodigester gas generation
is 80% and the system is
prepared to follow the
rhythm of production
growth. The Slaughterhouse
workers were trained to
operate the equipment and
will replicate their knowledge
among the other local
producers.

From June 27 to July 1, the
Santo Antônio Civil Consortium
(Csac) promoted the third
edition of the Respiratory
Protection Campaign at the
construction site of the Santo
Antônio Hydroelectric Power
Plant (HPP) em Porto Velho,
Rondônia.
With the theme “Respiratory
Protection: to Avoid Getting
Sick, I’ll Protect Myself,” the
initiative is directed at project
Members, primarily those
exposed to irritating substances
for the respiratory tract during
activities, such as carpenters and
crushing, digging and drilling
center workers.
Information on the correct
use of the protective masks,
distributed together with the
other Individual Protection
Equipment (PPE), as well as their
sterilization and replacement
were disclosed during the Daily
Safety Trainings (TDS) and
through banners and signs
distributed throughout the
construction site and placed
on the buses that transport
Members.
“We are currently experiencing
a period characterized by the
absence of rains, increased
dust and burnings, factors
that contribute toward the
emergence of respiratory
diseases,” said Daniella Lucian
Nunes, physical therapist at
Csac. “The use of masks prevents
the inhalation of the impurities
in the air and reduces the risk of
bronchitis, rhinitis, asthma and
silicosis,” she said.
