Representatives only.
March
Sunday 18 and Monday 19 Queens Baton Relay
Thursday 22 P & C Meeting and AGM
Dear Parents and Carers, The loud bang of thunder and the sudden downpour of rain were a welcome relief for a
short time yesterday. Teachers reported that some of the younger students were scared
and crying. It is no surprise given that they probably have never experienced such a
weather event like that in their life. Some parents were stranded for a while and we
experienced the lights flash on and off but fortunately the downpour stopped in time for
the older students to attend the performance, “Stamp out Bullying” in the Hall.
Our school has also registered for Harmony Day and National Bullying Week and have
planned events and activities when these events are recognised nationally later in the
term.
Spotlight on Staff
Thank you to Chappy Ros and Ms Donna (Defence School Transition Aide) who went
along on the school’s behalf to support the National Servicemen’s Association of
Australia last week at their service to remember the men and women who have died.
Ms Donna also gave up her Saturday to attend the Defence Expo and at that event
representatives from the Townsville Library have asked her if they could display the book
that Ms Donna, Chappy and students have made.
Congratulations and thank you for your great work Ms Donna and Chappy Ros.
Volunteer Mandatory Training
Thank you to the 54 parents, carers and family members who attended the training on
either Thursday or Friday. We are very lucky to have so many willing volunteers in our
school. If you were unable to attend the training but would like to be a volunteer please
let the office know and I will organise to conduct another session.
Queen’s Baton Relay
Townsville will be hosting the Queen’s Baton Relay on Sunday 18 and Monday 19 March
2018, presenting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Townsville locals to be a part of the
Baton’s Epic Global journey. Schools have been encouraged to bring students to the
event and if possible to align with one of the chosen relay baton bearers who is part of
the school community. Paul Warren (our local war hero previously from Mates4mates)
will be our chosen representative so we would like to cheer Paul on. We anticipate from
all information provided to us that it may be around 9.00am when Paul runs. Due to traffic closures and limited buses we
are needing to know your interest in being involved.
If you are interested in taking your child on Monday 19 March to the Baton Relay, staying with them to watch the relay and
then dropping your child/ren back to school, please complete the form on page 4. We must submit the information to the
Townsville City Council by next week so please provide the following information on the tear off slip if you haven’t already
done so in the previous newsletters.
Cluster School Work
Tomorrow our School Leaders will have the opportunity to work with the leaders from our local cluster state schools
together with William Ross State High School at a Leaders Forum. We thank Mr Evans and Mr Hustler for inviting our
Leaders and hosting the forum.
The Principals from the local cluster school will also be working together on a project focussed on Writing across Years 6
and 7. The purpose of this work is to identify how we can improve students’ achievement in writing in Years 6 and 7. We
will be observing WRSHS and Annandale students this time as due to our postponed swimming carnival Oonoonba SS
Year 6 students won’t be available.
Regards
Anne-Marie Day Principal
FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK
The Stamp out Bullying performance yesterday was very well enjoyed by our students. We had over 400 students attend so thank you very much for your support. Speaking to many of the students, I was told about what they learned and their amazement with some of the props, especially the talking piece of paper!
Swimming Carnivals
All the best to students for tomorrow’s swimming carnivals, subject to weather conditions of course. House captains are eagerly waiting for their first opportunity to lead their houses for the first time this year.
Positive Partnership Meetings
PPM’s with teachers, students and parents will be completed over the next few weeks. Those involved will be engaged in conversations about ‘learning goal setting’ for the student in English (reading and writing), Mathematics, Behaviour/Work Habits and Attendance.
The research indicates that goal setting is crucial for enhancing performance of students. Our teachers, using learning data collected so far about each student, will set appropriately challenging goals and will structure learning situations through explicit teaching so that the student can work towards reaching the learning goals that have been established. The goals are more likely to be attained when there is commitment to these challenging goals from both students and parents.
Were you successful today? How do you know?
Have a great week!
Trevor Milton
Deputy Principal

GRIP Leadership Conference
On the 8th of February Oonoonba State School students attended the 2018 GRIP Leadership Conference at the Mercure
Inn. During this event the leaders had much fun and learnt many things, including how to be a BERRY Leader by showing
a positive attitude in any situation. Students from many other schools attended this event.
During the GRIP Leadership conference there were lots of side activities to participate in, including loud noises and team
bonding activities. The creativity of the hosts was amazing by making it fun and interesting. Overall this event was a huge
success in teaching students how to be better role models and leaders. Every leader from Oonoonba State School
thoroughly enjoyed this event.
Icy Cups are on sale every Friday straight after school from the F Block PLA. Great flavours available.
