Open Atrium in Higher Education

Powerful, Flexible, Open Collaboration

What IS online collaboration?

Online Collaboration Software...

• connects people and teams with information they need to get work done together.

• sometimes focuses more on “assets” -- like sharing documents and storing files (think traditional course mgt software for storing syllabi and course materials)

• sometimes focuses more on “communications” -- like sharing discussions and ideas (think Yammer, or a discussion board)

And to organize it...

But Also...

• the landscape for collaboration software is changing rapidly.

• people like to declare things like “email is dead!” while most of us are still using them (especially slower to change organizations).

• collaboration can be a challenging, expensive, and large problem to tackle, especially for a large and complex organization.

and that makes things particularly challenging for higher education.

What We Hear from Higher Ed

We Need collaboration! For stuff like...

• an admissions process with outside reviewers

• a research portal for publishing and finding research

• an intranet for faculty and staff

• course materials and communications

• intradepartmental communications

• connecting disparate campuses or campus organizations

but higher education is unique when it comes to collaboration solutions.

Collaboration is challenging in higher education because there are so many

different types of projects.

I see a deep-rooted resistance to change, maybe because we haven’t

always been focused on realizing efficiency gains from technology.

Ledaership is moving toward a much more business-minded approach to

course offerings. Lowered cost of delivery, higher customer base, and less revenue being derived from traditional

tuition.

In Summary...

• We collaborate in a LOT of different ways, and a lot of different places, in higher ed.

• There’s a bit of a resistance to new solutions.

• The bigger the decision, the less likely we are to be on “the cutting edge”

• But we have an interest in figuring out new ways to add value - for students, faculty, and researchers.

How Open Source Helps

Open Source Allows Higher Ed to...

• Create solutions for multiple needs, without running up licensing costs.

• “Try Small Before you Buy Big.”

• Integrate with Plugins, instead of reinventing googledocs or destroying someone’s “favorite tool.”

• Create the potential for new value

• Open Atrium is an open source distribution of Drupal code.

• It is free to download to anyone. (drupal.org/project/openatrium)

• Installing the code from Drupal requires technical knowledge and an understanding of Drupal.

• Less-technical teams can try out Open Atrium in a hosted environment, like on Pantheon. (getpantheon.com)

• A developer team can help you use or customize it.
