MITOpenCourseWare

In 1999, MIT Faculty considered how to use the Internet to advance knowledge and educate students, and in 2000

proposed OCW. MIT published the first proof-of-concept site in 2002, containing 50 courses. By November 2007, MIT

completed the initial publication of the entire curriculum, over 1,800 courses in 33 academic disciplines.

MOOC: a definition

A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is an online course aiming at large-scale participation and open access via the Web.

MOOCs originated about 2008 within the Open Education Resources (OER) movement. Many of the original courses were based on connectivist theory, emphasizing that learning and knowledge emerge from a network of connections. 2012 became "the year of the MOOC" : several well-financed providers emerged such as Coursera (+60 international univ.), Udacity (Standford Univ.) and edX (MIT, Harvard Univ. Berkeley Univ. and more).
