The European Library
Central index of 119m bibliographic records
Remote access to a further c.80m
Currently using this data limited to catalogue search
and API
But what if TEL offered a dataset there was open for any type of re-use, even if
that use was
•commercial•not requiring attribution
•open to being remixed
=> Creating a Creative Commons 0 datasetfrom metadata aggregated by TEL
Inspirations
What can be achieved ?
Delivering datasets of commercial search
providers, helping drive traffic back to libraries
Allows research projects to create subsets of data
specific to their topic(e.g. Cendari project on
WW1 and medieval resources)
Allow other developers to enrich the data, helping with
semantic interpretation, entity recognition (people,
places), clustering of similar or identical records
Visualising bibliographic records according to place
and time of publication
Creating Linked Open Data that allows creates
relationships between library metadata and other
datasets … which can enrich others’ datasets in turn
Initial request for responses went out to member libraries in Summer
2013.
TEL now working with libraries on issues
Aim to have dataset released by end of year
