OpenAGRIS: using bibliographical data for linking into the agricultural knowledge web

Outline

MotivationsMoving from AGRIS to OpenAGRISImplementationConclusions + future work

AGRIS

A partnership of agricultural centers to collect bibliographic records Fostered by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)Started in 1974 2.7 millions of bibliographic records (XML) accessible online

04/11/23 3

Why AGRIS?

For data provider: a way to publish/advertise their research

For the public: a central place to access information about agriculture

Isn´t AGRIS enough?

No… simple bibliographic records are static:lack full textMiss connections with related work, work done same authors, …Miss connections with related web resources

Let’s try to make AGRIS more alive-> OpenAGRIS!

04/11/23 7

OpenAgris

A web applicationBased on RDFExtends AGRIS by aggregating information from more sources beyond the AGRIS providers= A web application that uses AGRIS data converted to RDF and linked to other resources= A linked-data environment that mashups the interlinked datasets

04/11/23 8

Linked Open Data

Publish structured data and link it with other datasets

Data is machine-readable, Meaning of data is explicitly definedIt is linked to, and can be linked from external datasets”

04/11/23 10

AGRIS data set

Includes AGRIS bibliographic recordsAGRIS journals – since 82.11% of AGRIS records are journal’s article, we created a dataset of agricultural journals with complete information about each journal

Converted into RDFResulted in ~ 60 million triples

04/11/23 11

Steps of conversion

Assign unique URI to each recordPut XML records in DB

Apply consistency checks, transformations, …

Output is RDF Load resulting triples into a triple store Publish online

Conversion of AGRIS data set into RDF

How is linking possible?

Linking is only possible if “common” information is available, e.g.,

Same authorsSame journal, ..Same indexing vacabularies

AGROVOC is central to OpenAGRIS linking

04/11/23 15

Linking through AGRIVIC

04/11/23 KISAF, Rome 16

Implementation

User issues a query Document is retrievedOpenAgris queries the Agrovoc RDF repository to extract keywords and relationships to other datasetsIf the resource is a journal’s article, the engine also queries the AGRIS journals dataset

Conclusions

Collaboration between AGRIS partners continues with OpenAGRIS Data dissemination is leveragedConversion to Linked Data pubblication is possible, actually even easy…

But use of appropriate vocabularies is essential

Process is repeatable by others… the more the better!

A resource like AGROVOC has proven extremely useful

Conclusions cont’d

In its original conception OpenAGRIS was to be a purely RDF-based applicationBut still only a few domains intersecting the agricultural domain offer RDF web servicesPragmatic considerations of basic data availability thus necessitated the use of non-RDF APIs

04/11/23 21

Future work

Further authomatize of the data collection processData harversting

Improve accessibility: SPARQL endpoint, RDF and non-RDF web services
