INTRODUCTION

New technology in Modern vehicles to enhance safety

Anti Lock Braking System (ABS)

Tilt angle (Roll angle) – crucial variable to determine

motorcycle behavior

Represents the amount of inclination to ensure the force balance

The technology uses a sensor to measure tilt angle at

real-time

Tilt angle is a by product of GPS but does not provide at

real-time

Optical sensors are suitable as technologically as well as

economically for racing applications

OPTICAL SENSOR

PARAMETERS

Measurement range : 15-100cms

Output voltage : 0.5-2.5 volts

Emitters : LED, LASER

Average output power : 0.1mW

MEASUREMENT PLOTS OF LED

MOUNTING OF SENSORS

TILT ANGLE

Definition : Angle represents the amount of inclination that

the bike needs in order to ensure the

force balance during the curved trajectory

and hence to reach a steady state cornering

condition .

HOW TO MEASURE TILT ANGLE?

Tilt angle ( ϕ )= arctan((d1 − d2)/L)

d1 = Ho + L/2 tan (ϕ)

d2 = Ho - L/2 tan (ϕ)

Where, L :- Lateral displacement b/w the 2 distance sensors Ho :- Distance b/w each sensor and the ground when

the bike axis is vertical d1&d2 :- Distance b/w the marked points and the

ground

SIGNAL PROCESSING

RESULTS ON RACETRACK

ADVANTAGES Small size Low cost Low weight <10 gm Variable range depending on mounting condition Accurate measurement

DRAWBACKS LED emitter suffers too much from solar

interference LED not adequate for real-time measurements at

high motorbike speeds Roughness of roads make noise interference

APPLICATION

Tilt angle measurement in sports bikes

CONCLUSION Optical sensors are used to measure tilt angle LED and LASER emitters are used LASER is used more than LED Sensors must be mounted at a reliable distance

from the ground
