• Why use web tools?• Time/personal management tools• Research tools• Tools for producing and storing

Why use web tools?

• They require no specialist software• You can access them from any

computer with internet access• They are usually very simple to use• They are also usually free!

Time management

Calendars• Schedule lectures, tutorials etc.• Have multiple calendars with different

colours for different purposes• Add public calendars of interest (such as the

InfoBites calendar!)• Print and share calendars

To-do lists

• Edit your to-do list online• Set deadlines and set up reminders• Print your to-do list or access it from

your phone/PDA/• Add widgets to your homepage

(more later!) or Google Calendar• Add tasks on the go

Personalised homepages

• Bring together all your resources on one page and make it your default homepage

Producing/storing documents online

Online document storage

• Store documents online as an extra backup or to share with others

• Link from your personalised homepage

Online document creation

• Create text documents, spreadsheets or presentations online

• Produce documents for numerous people to edit

• Produce online surveys for research

Keeping up to date

RSS feed readers

• Keep up to date with useful blogs, websites and journals articles relating to your research area.

Also available in some e-mail clients (e.g. Outlook 2007, Thunderbird)

Social Bookmarking

• Save useful websites to refer to/read at a later date

• Use tagging to describe the resources• Share with other students• Find similar resources from others
