Origin of Tradefl ame
Originating in Sweden and widely distributed under the Primus Handyman brand, Tradefl ame has been supplying heating tools to the professional and DIY user in Australia for over 40 years.
Today, the Tradefl ame range continues the traditional Primus Handyman design while working with the latest innovations in gas tools such as piezo ignition and trigger On/Off operation.
From general purpose handyman kits to pinpoint burners for the trade specialist, there’s a Tradefl ame LP Gas tool to fi t every heating application.
Compliance of products and services in the Australian market with Australian Standards is normally voluntary, unless the products or services are mandated by Government.
Many products that use gas or involve cylinders that compress gas are therefore mandatory and must comply to the appropriate Australian Standard. Products within the Tradefl ame range are certifi ed to the appropriate Australian Standard.
Many of our products are capable of performing multiple functions.
The icons below indicate the functions of each product.

Ready to use Kits
From butane powered soldering kits for the home hobbyist right through to our TF/ULTRA GAS™ Performance Gas – MAPP® Replacement powered blow torch kits for the professional tradesperson, there’s a Tradefl ame kit that’s right for you.
With four different fuel cylinders to choose from, including a refi llable green option for those wanting to reduce their environmental impact, our kits are designed to ensure you get the right power and performance for your job. Housed in distinctive and retailer friendly packaging that works as hang sell and free standing, these kits are the simplest way to choose the right burner and fuel combination from the Tradefl ame range.
These kits have been designed to cater for DIY through to professional / industrial users, who require very high temperatures to get the job done. The intended uses for these kits are vast - from a simple heat solution through to soldering, brazing and welding where knowledge of metals and temperatures is required. Included in this range is the Oxypower Blow Torch Kit which is a portable solution for welding without the use of oxygen/acetylene equipment.
TYPE OF METAL
When you are intending to solder, braze or weld it is important to understand the type of metal you are using, the type of fi ller metal (solder, brazing rods) and the type of fl ux required to get the job done.
Most torches burn fuel in normal air with fl ames reaching temperatures of 1700-2000°C and are intended for soldering and brazing as their fl ame cannot melt many metals.
Torches that combine a fuel with compressed oxygen can be used for soldering, brazing and welding as they can reach the higher temperatures required for welding purposes (2800-3000°C).
SOLDERING
Soldering is the process of joining metals together by melting a fi ller metal (solder) into the joint. The fi ller metal has a lower melting point than the work piece. The work piece metal does not reach melting point. The right solder needs to be used for the right application:
Electrical Work: Solder with a rosin core (lead free).
Metal Work: Solder with an acid core (lead free).
Plumbing work: Solid (no core) solder needs to be used in conjunction with fl ux (lead free).
BRAZING
Brazing is the process of joining metals where a fi ller metal (brazing rod) is heated and melted, then distributed between two or more close fi tting metal parts. The fi ller metal reaches melting point whereas the work piece is heated but does not
melt. Brazing rod selection is dependent on the type of metal being joined.
The major difference between soldering and brazing is the higher temperatures required for brazing work. The use of fl ux is essential in brazing applications to prevent the oxidisation of the work pieces.
WELDING
Welding is the process of joining metals by melting the work piece and using a fi ller material to form a pool of molten material that becomes a strong joint after cooling. Unlike soldering or brazing, the work pieces reach melting point to combine with the fi ller material.
What’s the melting point of metal?
That depends on the alloy of metal you are talking about. The term alloy is commonly misused as a substitute for aluminium. An alloy is really a mixture of metals, any kind of metals. Almost all metal used today is a mixture and therefore an alloy.
Other metals are added to tune the properties of an alloy like strength, corrosion resistance or ease of fabrication. Steel is just the element iron that has been processed to control the amount of carbon. Iron, out of the ground, melts at around 1510°C (2750°F). Steel often melts at around 1370°C (2500°F).
To understand more properties of different types of metals see the Metal Melting Points Table inside the back cover.
SOLDER, BRAZING RODS AND FILLER METALS
The material commonly known as “solder” would be better called silver bearing alloy. The amount of silver contained in the alloy is of importance in relation to the type of material being worked with.
The higher the silver content in the silver bearing alloy, the lower temperatures needed to melt it, but the lower the tensile strength of the resulting join. The lower the amount of silver in the silver bearing alloy, the higher the temperature needed to melt it and the higher the tensile strength of the work - so it’s a balancing act for the type of job required.
FUELS
The fuels mentioned in this brochure are all essentially blends of LP Gas that are manufactured for a variety of purposes. The temperatures quoted on the opposite page are indicative of the fl ame temperature when mixed with both air and compressed oxygen.
Actual temperatures achieved depend on many things such as metal type or composition, the size of the area being worked on, weather factors (torches are generally less effective on windy days) and the size of the burner being used.

SAFETY
Ensure that you wear the appropriate safety equipment before using any of the equipment in this catalogue. This may include safety goggles, gloves and other personal protection equipment. The tools displayed in this catalogue get hot and some have naked fl ames, appropriate personal protection equipment is required to be used when using these tools.
Always do an assessment of your work site to ensure that fl ammable substances are not in the vicinity of where you are working before you ignite any tools.
Always follow the guidelines written on the labels of the gas cylinders in regards to handling and storage.
