OSS-­‐OME  #1  WATER  ROCKET  OSS  1  –  Buck,  De  La  Mora,  Galvan,  Hatun,  Kurian,  Regondi,  Simanjuntak,  Swaminathan,  Vonwegen,  Xu  

Mo0va0on  (Purpose)  Design  a  water  rocket  using  recycled  materials  that  has  the  capability  to  glide  in  the  air  for  the  maximum  amount  of  Ime  by  ensuring  a  quick  deployment   of   the   parachute   to  maintain   the  stability.  

Challenges  1.  AutomaIc  deployment  of  the  parachute  2.  The  design  of  the  nose  cone  3.  OpImal  air  to  water  raIo  

Approach  and  Innova0ons  1.  Installing  a  plasIc  fork  to  give  structural  

integrity  to  the  cone  while  ascending  and  to  hold  the  strings  while  descending  

2.  Reducing  the  size  of  the  cone  to  obtain  a  lighter  weight  and  creaIng  a  smooth  parachute  deployment  system  

3.  Parachute  folding  technique    4.  Using  2:1  as  the  opImal  air  to  water  raIo  

to  gain  the  maximum  thrust  

Experiments  and  Trials  Oss-­‐ome   rocket  has  only  experienced   the  downfall   trial   to  ensure   the  parachute   deployment   system   worked   as   planned.   The   trials   were  performed  in  the  outdoors  and  the  wind  should  affect  the  flight.  1.   First  trial  –  the  parachute  did  not  deploy  due  to  the  weight  of  the  

nose  cone  2.   Second   trial   –   the   nose   cone   was   successfully   detached   but   the  

parachute  did  not  open  due  to  the  folding  technique  3.   Third   trial   –   both   the   nose   cone   and   parachute   deployed   as  

planned.  Also,  due  to  the  strong  winds,  Oss-­‐ome  rocket  was  driYed  and  glided  for  a  longer  amount  of  Ime.    

Rocket  Materials  1.  Thrust  chamber:  1.5L  recycled  plasIc  bo[le  2.  ConnecIng  part:  cut-­‐off  plasIc  bo[le  3.  Nose  cone:  recycled  paper,  plasIc  fork,  clay  4.  Three  fins:  recycled  cardboard  5.  Parachute:  plasIc  and  strings  6.  Fuel  system:  pressurized  air  and  water  

Result  Gliding  velocity  obtained  is  0.67  m/s  (esImated).
