Every parent wants to give their toddler a head start with regard to speaking, and experts suggest it’s easier than most people think.
“You don’t have to spend a bundle on DVDs or flashcards,” says speech-language pathologist Amy Nelson. “Language acquisition is birthed through face-to-face interactions, and by engaging your child in everyday activities and experiences.”
Following are ten simple suggestions on how to build your toddler’s vocabulary.
1. Associate through reading. “Create an interactive experience by making books
come alive for your child,” says Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, Ph.D., educator and three-time author on
this subject. “When you are reading together, pick up on your child’s interest then relate the content of the book to his life. If there’s a picture of a dog, say ‘That’s like Grandma’s dog. Where else have you seen a dog?’ So he links what he sees in the book to his own experiences.”
2. Incorporate core vocabulary. “Choose books that have bright colors, simple
pictures and short phrases or sentences that use core vocabulary—nouns such as animals, toys and food,” says Nelson. “Give your child an opportunity to label and repeat words. Also use what speech-language pathologists call ‘Expansion.’ If your child says, ‘Cat,’ you say, ‘Big cat,’ or ‘Sleeping cat’ by adding an adjec-tive or verb to increase his length of utterance.”

10 Tips to Build Your Toddler’s Vocabulary
6 Our Kids | Childcare & Preschool Finder June 2016 Childcare & Preschool Finder June 2016 | OurKidsSanAntonio.com 7
3. Encourage repetition. “Children often have a favorite book they want to
hear time and again, and that’s okay,” says Golinkoff. “Repeated readings build toddler’s vocabulary and story structure understanding.”
Amy Vitsorek found this to be true. “Right now [my 2 ½ year old] Maggie is into
princesses, so every day she carries around a suitcase that has four princess books in it. She’s memorized the storyline and tells it in her own words by looking at the pictures. Then she’ll ask me to read it to her,” she says.
4. Visit venues. “Take trips to venues that have programs specifi-
cally designed for children,” says Nelson. “Children’s museums have a variety of exhibits so toddlers can learn words about opposites such as wet and dry, big and little, up and down. If you go to other sites such as natural history or art museums, scale it down to your child’s level. Focus on basic vocabulary and point out the animals, flowers, shapes and colors you see.”
“Last year when we took Conner to the zoo, I pointed out different animals such as an elephant and talked about its big ears and long nose,” says Danielle Jackson of her now 22 month old. “Later if we saw
an animal on TV or in a book, I’d remind him of our trip and encourage him to say its name and make the animal sound.”
5. Out and about. “Everyday outings provide opportunities to talk
about what you see at the supermarket, pharmacy, park and doctor’s office,” says Golinkoff. “When you take walks, point out different things and bring back leaves, rocks and sticks so you and your child can count, sort and explore more. When he goes to the pediatrician for a well checkup, trace around his body on the table paper, then take it home and help him label his body parts.”
6. Sing songs. “Interactive songs and rhymes that incorporate
movement with melodic or rhythmic patterns are captivating for children and encourage vocabulary expansion,” says Vitsorek, who teaches music to preschoolers. “Ones like ‘Head and Shoulders’ help them learn body part identification; others such as ‘Eentsy Weentsy Spider’ teach directional concepts.”
7. Tinker with toys. “Blocks and simple puzzles offer geometric and
spatial language with terms like ‘above,’ ‘below’ and

‘next to,’” says Golinkoff. “Dress up clothes increase language too. Give your child old clothes and play along with his fantasy.”
“Your toddler may not be ready for board games but you can use the game pieces as manipulatives,” says Nelson. “Put checkers into different piles accord-ing to colors and count them. Or adapt games such as Barnyard Bingo to work on matching, naming and counting.”
8. Interactive games. “I use interactive games such as ‘This Little Piggy’
and ‘Humpty Dumpty’ to build Maggie’s vocabulary,” says Vitsorek. “I’ll stop and leave off a word so she can fill it in. When we’re driving in the car, we also play ‘I Spy’ with colors. As a result, she knows all of her colors.”
9. Narrate routines. “Encouraging talk during our daily routines has
been a great way to expand Conner’s vocabulary,” says Jackson. “When he’s getting dressed I’ll say, ‘I’m putting on your pants . . . your shirt . . . your shoes.’ He’s already starting to repeat those words. He’ll say, ‘Sock?’ And I’ll say, “Yes, that’s your sock.’”
10. Review and retell. “Before going to bed, rehash the day’s activities to
cement vocabulary your child used during the day,” says Golinkoff. “Or encourage him to recount his experiences to another adult with your assistance.”

Ready to help your child give up a pacifier? Here are some tips for navigating the tricky transition.
Whether they’re crystal clear, neon-bright, or covered in rhinestones, pacifiers are the modern baby’s accessory of choice. Thanks to studies showing that they reduce the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), most pediatricians have given pacifiers the green light. A study in Pediatrics found that a whopping 68 percent of parents give them to their babies before six weeks of age.
Babies aren’t the only ones who love them; parents quickly become addicted to the pacifier’s soothing effects on their off-spring. Unfortunately, it often becomes a habit that overstays its welcome.
Why Wean? While some children give up non-nutritive or comfort
sucking on their own, others cling to the habit well into the preschool years. According to Lotus Su, D.D.S., of Pediatric Dental Associates, using a pacific too much or for too long can contribute to dental problems, including deformation the palate and shifting of the teeth, as well as mouth breathing and dry mouth, which may increase susceptibility to tooth decay.
Many doctors and dentists recommend ending the habit before permanent front teeth begin to emerge, which can happen before kindergarten. “I recommend stopping pacifier use by age three,” says Dr. Su.
“The earlier a pacifier habit is stopped, the less likely that there will be any dental problems.”
Potential problems extend beyond the teeth. Pacifier use is associated with otitis media, or middle ear infections. Minor health upsets like gastrointestinal infections and oral thrush are also more commonly seen in pacifier users.
Parents may be swayed by medical data and dentists’ recommendations, but kids often need some coaxing to give up the long-held habit. Guilt-inducing lectures about dental problems or germs may be counterproductive, causing them to dig in their heels. Instead, help them become confidently pacifier-free with these tactics.
Literary LossBefore embarking on a pacifier-purge, check out some
children’s books on the topic. After listening to stories like The Last Noo-Noo by Jill Murphy or Pacifiers Are Not Forever by Elizabeth Verdick, your child may be more receptive to the idea.
The Paci FairySteal this idea from Supernanny Jo Frost: have your child
place his pacifiers in a large envelope to mail to the “pacifier fairy.” Put the envelope in the mailbox together before bed. Once he’s asleep, swap the envelope for a new toy. When he wakes up, excitedly take him to the mailbox to find his new treasures.
Make the CutSnipping a small hole in a pacifier can help it lose its appeal
quickly, encouraging a child to give it up on his own. Be sure to dispose of a broken pacifier promptly, because it can harbor bacteria or become a choking hazard if a child continues to use it.
Out of Sight, Out of MindParents seeking the quickest route to pacifier-freedom can
simply throw them all away. Kelly Stallings opted for the cold-turkey approach with daughter Taylor. “The first night was rough, but after that, she didn’t care,” she says. Just make sure to get rid of each and every one, so your child isn’t tempted to relapse (and you’re not tempted to cave).
No matter how stubbornly your child clings to a beloved binky, eventually it will be a thing of the past. Once your child is free of the pacifier habit, you’re free as well—from relent-lessly searching for them, washing them, and buying them. Enjoy your well-earned liberation. At least, until the next must-have item comes along.

Stranger Danger?10 Smart Strategies to Help Keep Your Child Safe
With the parade sounds of blaring horns and beating drums marching off into the distance, Angie Worth, along with her newborn daughter Ella, her two-year-old son Todd, and her elderly grand-mother, began to head back to the car. The exciting morning turned into chaos when Worth lost sight of her energetic toddler.
“Todd took off running into the crowd and was out of my sight in just a few seconds,” Worth says. “I started yelling his name and running in the general direction of where I thought he might be.” Just as she was about to call the police, Todd reappeared. “I was so relieved and shaken at the same time,” she says.
The idea of losing a child and not knowing what happened to him is every parent’s worst nightmare. Although abduction by strangers is statistically rare, the media sensationalism of such events makes the ordeal seem all the more likely.
Chances are though, your child may sometime need to seek help from a stranger, which leaves many parents scratching their heads: Who should your child approach for help and how much information
should your child give? And what about those individuals who your family only “sort-of ” know?
Define “stranger.” Beth Wegner, a community crime prevention specialist facilitates safety work-shops with parents and children. She tells children that “strangers can be nice. They may have toys or pets, but strangers are people you do not know.”
In general, she says it’s easiest to teach very young kids not to talk to strangers at all. “For the older children, we can go into more detail, and usually through questions, flesh out what a dangerous stranger is,” she says.
Most importantly, if someone makes your child feel uncomfortable and won’t leave her alone, she should yell “Stranger!” and run and tell a trusted adult.
Practice “what-if ” scenarios. Use visits to large stores, shopping malls or the zoo as opportunities to educate your children about what to do if you should become separated from each other. Agree on an easy-to-find meeting spot.

Debby Helmer says she began pointing out cash registers at various stores to her son Alex, age 7, when he was three years old. “I have found that the cash registers are easier to find than customer service. And I tell my kids to only talk to the cashier,” she says. Most of all, assure your child that you will never leave a place without him.
Are there safe strangers? “With impersonators out there, including women with children, the safe stranger concept is a slippery slope,” Wegner says.
Err on the side of caution if you point out strang-ers your children could seek help from. In a store, for example, make sure they notice a store employee’s actual uniform, including distinctive name tags or badges, and not just the colors employees wear. Also, instruct them to only talk to employees in an area where other people are around.
Share limited information. Car rides provide a good time to practice going over your child’s name, address and phone number. Turning it into a sing-song jingle also helps him memorize all those numbers. If your child does seek help from a stranger, however, his first name and his parents’ first and last names should suffice, says Wegner.
Take pictures. Helmer suggests nonchalantly taking your kids’ pictures with your cell phone when you arrive at a busy public place. Not only will you have yet another adorable picture of their smiling mugs to text to your family and friends, you’ll also have a current picture of your children to share right away with authori-ties should the unthinkable occur. And you won’t have to rack your already panicked brain about what clothes they wore that day.
Avoid advertising your child’s name. Predators can use your child’s name on his coat or backpack as a way to strike up a conversation.
Have a couple of “in case of emergency” friends on call, just in case. The schools typically ask families to designate a few emergency contacts who have permis-sion to pick children up from school in the event of an emergency. Have a similar carte-blanche policy in your family and make sure your kids know who the desig-nated safe people are whom you have selected.
Tell them who they may NOT go with. It’s difficult enough to have someone untrustworthy in your family, but if you do not want that person to pick up your children in case of an emergency, then the children need to know that they should stay put until one of their “safe people” arrives.

Remind your kids that their safety is “more important than anyone’s embarrassment, inconvenience or offense,” says Jennifer Blackwood, a certified Kid Power instructor, who teaches children safety skills and self-defense.
Have a secret family password. If someone asks your child to go somewhere with him, your child can say that her mom and dad only allows her to go with someone who knows the password. Explain to your child that even if the person is insistent that he has your permission, you would never give anyone permission to take her anywhere without her knowing ahead of time. And, if it’s a real emergency, the person you’ve put in charge will know the family password.
Teach facts not fear. Empowering a child with the skills to protect herself, like never approaching a stranger’s car, builds confidence. “Just as you would teach manners or crossing the street, weave personal safety skills into daily life in a very matter of fact way,” Blackwood says.
Freelance journalist Christa Melnyk Hines and her husband are the parents of two boys. Christa’s latest book is Happy, Healthy & Hyperconnected: Raise a Thoughtful Communicator in a Digital World.
What do your child’s old toothbrushes, baby teeth and hairbrushes have in common? As awful as it is to thinkin about, these items can serve as DNA samples to help find a missing child. Seal your child’s old toothbrush in a plastic bag in the freezer labeled with the date and your child’s name. Save your child’s baby teeth in a labeled film canister in the freezer. Collect hair with the root still attached from your child’s hairbrush and save it in an envelope labeled with your child’s name.
For more child safety tips, check out www.McGruff.org, www.safekids.org, www.ncpc.org, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s website www.missingkids.com, and your local police department.

Sitting still and listening to a story is a devel-opmental skill that can be nurtured over time. Sometimes young children are just too full of energy to sit still and pay attention to a book. They’re like a basket full of puppies needing to wiggle, run and play. How will you ever instill a love of reading into your wiggly toddler or pre-schooler?
Never fear; there are ways to give your child the freedom to work out the wiggles and still leave time for some snuggly reading time. Here are ten strategies that just might work for your little wiggler:
Be sure your child gets adequate active play time before choosing to read. Children will be much more likely to manage a quiet reading time if they’ve “used up their wiggles” in vigorous play.
Choose naptime or bedtime as primary reading times. Your child is already sleepy and ready for a cuddly quiet time. Some parents find that reading during bath time works well.
Many parents find that allowing their child to draw, do a lacing card, build with legos or hold something in their hand such as a stress ball or thinking putty helps with body management. This is especially true for children who are kinesthetic learners—they need to touch, feel and keep their hands busy.
Build the skill according to your child’s age and development. Younger children need shorter read-ing times. You, as the parent, will best know your child’s readiness for listening. Select short pieces to read—several short poems or nursery rhymes, or a book with few words.
Do interactive “reading” in which you spend a lot of time talking about the pictures and asking for responses from your child. “What sound does that dog make?” or “What color is the truck?” Merely interacting with the pages of a book builds reading readiness skills. Or select books that give the child the opportunity to open pockets, zip up zippers, touch and feel textures, and the like.
Is Your Child Too Wiggly to Read?
By Jan Pierce
14 Our Kids | Childcare & Preschool Finder June 2016 Childcare & Preschool Finder June 2016 | OurKidsSanAntonio.com PB
Write books about your own family members. Make reading time personal with stories of your daily life, the antics of your pets and the fun things your family is doing. These homegrown stories will become your child’s favorites.
Follow your child’s latest interests. Children love to read about their favorite movie character, their favorite sport, their favorite anything. Find titles at your local library and then move to new books as your child’s interests grow and change.
Choice is a big factor in motivation for reading activities. When you allow your child to pick the book at the library or at reading times, you encourage buy in and increase the quality of the reading experience.
Try using audio books when driving in the car. Children are a “captive audience” in their car seats and it may help to pass the time while increasing listening skills.
Follow up activities may be appropriate at times. A craft, a snack related to the reading topic, or a game that incorporates the reading topics may help keep reading time enjoyable.
Above all, be sure reading time is a positive experi-ence. You may have to abandon reading time once in a while or try again at a later time. It’s so important that children look forward to reading times as pleasurable experiences. Read alouds are one of the ways we build a desire in our children to “do it myself ” at the appropriate time.
Believe it or not, wiggly toddlers and pre-schoolers can listen to short pieces that reflect their interests. Short and sweet reading times—that’s the solution to the wiggles.
