STEWARDSHIP by the BOOK-June 7, 2020 The Gospel today is sometimes called “the Gospel in miniature” because it so concisely sums up the Gospel message. Why We Believe in the TRINITY
The Trinity is one of the most difficult concepts for us as humans to understand. We have used different symbols through the ages to try to understand the Trinity. One symbol, a primitive one, is the triangle, a three-sided figure. Legend has it that St. Patrick used a shamrock to explain the Trinity. Such efforts tried, not very successfully, to help us understand the inner life of the Trinity and how there could be three persons in one God. If you had lived 1600 years ago, you would have heard people arguing in the streets about whether the Son was equal to or less than the Father. St. Gregory of Nyssa complained that you couldn’t go to the bakery or baths without encountering one of these discussions. It was only in the 3rd and 4th centuries, after many forceful and even violent debates, that the Church hammered out the doctrine most of us learned in Catechism classes: that there are 3 equal persons but only one God. Yet the roots of our belief in God as Trinity go back to the Bible, to the Hebrew Scriptures. The Jewish people met God in the events of their history, as we know from Exodus. “I am the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.” Eventually, the people of Israel came to understand that God’s saving actions stretched from the creation of the universe to the final Day of the Lord. They came to understand that their God was truly “merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (Exodus 34:6). They used a number of metaphors to capture the manner in which God worked in the world on their behalf, such as “Spirit of God,” “Word of God,” and “Wisdom of God.” These expressions were not seen as representing distinct realities. There was one God whose name was Yahweh. In the New Testament, the story of God’s presence in the world is centered on Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus is presented as one sent by Yahweh, whom Jesus calls ”Father.” Jesus is proclaimed in the Gospels as “Son of the Most High,” “Lord,” and “Emmanuel” (which means ‘God with Us’). It is Jesus the Son who speaks of “the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything…”(John 14:26). Thus, God in the New Testament is named as “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” In later centuries what this means would be refined, defined and clarified. Church teachers would draw on philosophy to help understand the inner life of this mystery. At the heart of the Trinity is the person of Jesus and His saving-death for our sake. Because of Jesus we see that God is God-for-us, God-with-us, and all who follow Jesus are to be baptized “in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). When we celebrate Trinity Sunday we remember that we are part of the community of believers who experience God as One in whom “we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28), and whom we name as Father when we pray with Jesus in the power of their Spirit. We may never grasp the inner life of the Trinity, but God’s actions in the world wrap us in the divine embrace. Sincerely in Christ, Father Chris We are anticipating celebrating weekend Masses again on June 13-14. This is not yet confirmed. Until then, Fr. Chris will continue celebrating live-streamed Sunday Mass at 10:30AM. Funeral Masses suspended.
Confirmation and 1st Communion deferred. Everyone should pray the Rosary for an end to the crisis.
ALTAR FLOWERS: If you would like to donate altar flowers in memory of a loved one, or in honor of an occasion e.g. birthday, wedding anniversary; please call Patricia at the Rectory 973/663-0211 by Wed. $55-$75.
Let us pray together everyday at 11 a.m., reciting this prayer 9 times asking our Blessed Mother for her intercession in keeping us well and ending the spread of the COVID-19 virus in our world.
MEMORARE Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help,
or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come,
before thee I stand, sinful & sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my
petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. AMEN.
AN UPDATE FROM OUR PASTOR- 6/2/20 Reopening the Church for Mass: We are now planning to have weekend public masses on June 13th & 14th, but we are still waiting for the governor’s go ahead. In the meantime, I will celebrate 10:30AM Mass – live streamed on our website. Dates for First Communion and Confirmation have not yet been set, but hopefully will be celebrated later in June. There will be two celebrations for each sacrament, and we will observe social distancing and proper protocols for all liturgical celebrations. That means just 25% of capacity attendance of the church, about 75-80 people at the liturgy. As soon as we get word that we can schedule these sacraments we will post the dates for our people. It is important that our sophomores receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation and that our second graders receive First Communion. All pastors have been given permission from Bishop Serratelli to confer the sacrament of Confirmation. Let us pray that we can accomplish all of this in the month of June. Fr. Chris
The first Sunday in June we usually hold our “Ministry Breakfast.” Since that is not to be this year, we would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the people who give of themselves to serve our parish: The Religious Ed teachers & aides; Christmas Pageant, Halloween Parade, Antioch, & Vacation Bible Camp, PB&J volunteers; our Adult & Childrens’ CHOIRS, Garden & Beautification Ministries, RCIA Team, Rosary Altar Society, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Altar Servers, Cantors, Counters, Ushers, Dover Soup Kitchen, Shoprite sales, & Food Pantry volunteers; the behind the scenes maintenance people; our Music Director, custodian, trustees; our Religious Ed DRE, Religious Ed and Parish secretaries & volunteers, & our Deacon. A Special thank you to those who have been involved in our televised Masses. Thank you & May the Lord bless you all, Fr. Chris
