Where We Stand at this Moment in Time
Our summer will come to an end in the next week as September begins on Tuesday. This summer has been unlike any other in living memory as restrictions imposed on us by the Coronavirus have impacted all of our lives. These restrictions began on March 15th and now we approach the six month point in this “new normal” time. Travel out of state could result in fourteen days of quarantine on return. Travel by air is down by 80% over last year and many people did not take a vacation this summer. The Jersey shore regained its popularity for families in New Jersey as they sought a time to relax and have fun with their children. As September begins, the reopening of schools is a major concern for parents and teachers. A satisfactory solution to this problem is still being refined as conditions change week by week. The number of cases continues to go down weekly yet we are months away from defeating the virus. An effective vaccine may not be available until early in 2021 despite a mad dash for a solution. Here in the parish we are working on a plan for our Religious Education Program. We hope to provide in class instruction for children who will attend regular classes. We will also rely on parents to catechize and instruct the children who will not attend regular classes. We have not been down this road before. Mrs. Hedrick and I will meet with parents on Wednesday, September 9th in church at 7:30 pm to discuss the program. It may not be possible to satisfy all parents but we will do our best to provide quality catechesis for our children. The RCIA program is scheduled to begin with an Open House on Tuesday, Sept. 15th at 7:15 PM in the church hall. We are still waiting to hear how the Family Promise Program will be reactivated. Since mid‐March families who are homeless have been housed in local motels in Morris County. It is much too early to determine when religious congregations will be called on to house these families as we have done since 2003 when the Parish Center was completed. My best guess is that this will not happen until early in 2021 as the protocols in place to respect social distancing and sanitization make it difficult for congregations to meet these guidelines. The iron grip of the Coronavirus remains very strong as we observe six months of the pandemic. The world of sports has been impacted severely by this virus as have most activities. Our shopping is now approaching “normal” again with reservations. Despite the reality of the Coronavirus and the disruptions to life caused by it we will endeavor to celebrate Eucharist weekly here in the parish. We will try to keep the faith life of the parish as “normal as possible” during this crisis. We ask you to be patient if not all of your wishes can be met at this time. Let us pray for an end to this virus by Thanksgiving; if not Thanksgiving then maybe Christmas. What a gift that would be!
Blessings! Fr. Chris
