H. Nelson Aguila, DVMCenter to Reduce Cancer Health
Disparities National Cancer Institute
Why is Diversity Important?
• Broadens the research “lens” to include new viewpoints from those from diverse backgrounds
• Enhances innovation and creativity in cancer research
• Contributes to reducing cancer disparities by more effectively addressing existing disparities within the population
• Promotes effective use of public funds for cancer research
• Consistent with NIH’s Commitment to Excellence: providing support for talented individuals to explore ideas at the highest level of inquiry

NIH/NCI CRCHD MissionInitiates, integrates, and engages in collaborative research studies with NCI divisions and NIH institutes and Centers to promote research and training in cancer health disparities and to improve cancer outcomes in communities experiencing an excess burden of cancer.
•Coordinates and strengthens the NCI cancer research portfolio in basic, clinical, translational and population-based research to address cancer health disparities (CHD)
•Leads NCI’s efforts in training of students and investigators from diverse populations in cancer and CHD research
• Creates state-of-the-art regional networks/centers dedicated to CHD research and care
How CRCHD Achieves Its Mission…
