NEW DELHI, Dec 12:
The Indian Railways hasditched the tried-and-testedmethod of tying crackers tothe tracks to alert drivers ofapproaching signals, infavour of a system that canensure trains no longer moveat a snail's pace in foggyweather.
The device -- Fog Pass(Fog Pilot Assistance System)or FSD -- is GPS-enabled andcan continuously calculate thedistance of the train in relationto the next landmark, enablingdrivers to know when exactlya signal is approaching.
The national transporterhas recently installed 4,920such devices in the most fog-affected railway zones --
northern, north-central, north-eastern and north-western.
Plans are afoot to install anadditional 1,175 such devicesin two more zones by thisFriday -- east-central andnortheast-frontier -- to takethe total to 6,095, covering themost-affected zones.
"In the absence of thisdevice, (the) crew has toreduce speed, often to walkingspeed in search for signals. With the deployment of FSDs,train pilots are able to knowprecisely and, in advance, about the location of signals,level-crossing gates and othersuch approaching markers," anofficial said today.
Any approaching landmarkwill be announced by a record-ed voice before 500 metresand three pre-fed marks areshown at a time on the displayunit in bold letters, along with
the distance to reach the firstlandmark. Speed and time arealso displayed on the right-bottom corner. There is also aprovision to cross-check histo-ry, the official added. (PTI)
