DESCRIPTION

Palawan is a land of majestic limestone cliffs, mountain ranges, primeval caves, underground river systems, picturesque coasts and breathtaking white sand coves, the province of Palawan is more than 1,700 islands and islets. It is a nature sanctuary, covered in a mantle of rainforests. Palawan Exotic flora and fauna thrive in its lush interior. Its far-flung islets are the nesting ground of giant sea turtles, known locally as pawikan. Its waters are a paradise of living corals and colorful marine life. High among its limestone cliffs can be found the nests of swiftlets whose edible nests are the precious ingredient in the Chinese delicacy, nido soup. Palawan has been dubbed the "Cradle of Philippine Civilization". Several decades ago, the fossils of a 22,000-year-old cave dweller and other artifacts were discovered within a series of caverns called the Tabon Caves. Anthropologists believe the Tabon Man to have originated from Borneo. Today, 18% of Palawan's population is comprised of cultural minority groups such as the Tagbanua and the Tau't Bato. Palawan was one of the first places reached by the Chinese using land bridges. They named the place Pa-lao-yu meaning "Land of BeautifulHarbours". The Malay people moved in during the 12th century, followed by the Spanish colonizers in the 17th century. The Spaniards took control of trade and agriculture and brought Catholicism to Palawan. The belief now is that Palawan came from the spanish word "Paragua" because the main island's shape resembles a closed umbrella. It was the Americans who established the province of Palawan in 1902. It was in September 1944 when 24 Japanese warships taking cover near Coron's islands were bombarded and sunk by the US planes. These shipwrecks, reefs, and the abundant marine and coral life has made Coronan ideal diving destination. Travelers should know that the culture of Palawan is one which focuses on the appreciation of the environment. This is because the area of Palawan consists of a unique natural environment which is considered as one of the most well-preserved in the world.
