In the Christian calendar, Palm Sunday is

celebrated one week prior to Easter Sunday. It

commemorates the entrance of Jesus into

Jerusalem. The day is named after the palm

fronds that were used to greet Jesus on his way.

Every year, thousands of people follow Jesus’s

footsteps in a colorful procession held in

Jerusalem.

It is interesting to note that the

“Hosanna” call, made during the

chanting, is similar to the Hebrew

word “Hosha’ na”, which is a call for

God’s salvation.

This call is made during the Jewish

festival of Sukkot, while waving palm

fronds .

The crowd who greeted Jesus in

Jerusalem was Jewish, and called

Hosha’ na” out to him, asking for“

salvation from a Messiah.

The original sound of the call was

kept by the translators of the New

Testament, and so it is used to this

day.
