Last Monday Morning, I joined the Blessed Trinity Academy second-grade students in a virtual retreat as part of their preparation for First Communion. I read to them The Story of the Loaves and Fishes. As crowds gathered to listen to the word of Jesus, the Apostles became worried that they would not be able to feed everyone. Jesus replied, “Do not worry. All things are possible with God.” During these challenging times, our faith is what keeps BTA strong. Our school’s mission, which guides all our work, was the beacon as we quickly pivoted to distance learning over a month ago. The teachers have been outstanding, courageous, and hardworking in fulfilling our mission in new ways. They have not missed a beat. While it has not been easy, BTA has had many successes transitioning to distance learning. Here are a few highlights:

• Connecting to our faith each day with morning prayer, religion classes, prayers said for special groups, and attending virtual mass on Fridays.

• Maintaining high academic expectations using synchronous and asynchronous learning, integrating many Google products.

• No “Pause Days” - students are learning 5 days a week through meets, assignments, tests, and quizzes, and completing hands-on, project-based assignments.

• Staying connected socially through Google Meets for class time, storytime, lunchtime, and even bedtime stories for the whole family.

• Community-wide engagement in virtual Spirit Weeks, the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge, video creations, and many other social media initiatives.

• Teachers going above and beyond to support students through planning social distancing pickups, deliveries, and surprise visits!

THANK YOU! We could not have been as successful without support and collaboration from parents, families, Father Tim, and supporting parish members from St. Mary’s - St. Ursula. Please keep us in your prayers as we continue to deliver a quality Catholic education and foster a loving, faith-filled community. A Catholic education is a lasting gift that provides our children with a strong foundation, committed to service to God, the Church, and the community. While we are separated physically, we remain united in our faith with one another! Our Mission Blessed Trinity Academy is dedicated to academic excellence by challenging each child to their full potential. We model and teach Catholic morals and values, while committing ourselves to the service of our school, our parishes, and the surrounding communities. It is our mission to provide a nurturing environment that enables our students to reflect, collaborate, and develop their talents and abilities, as they strive to become strong Catholic leaders in the 21st century.

From the Desk of Moira Edmiston - Principal at Blessed Trinity Academy

Parish financial results for the first nine months from July 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020 compared to the same period last year are shown in the table immediately below: Operating revenues increased $23,951 or 3.0%. Offertory collections declined $18,000 or 2.5%. Fortunately, this revenue decline was offset by a Net Fund Raising revenue increase of $42,000 due to the change in timing of the Parish Festival. Operating expenses increased by $38,332 or 5.2%. The increase was due to higher Operations & Maintenance costs, Property & Liability Insurance expense, and Administration costs (postage & Pittsburgh Catholic fees). Lower Adult Education/RCIA costs partially offset the above increases. The Gross Operating Surplus decreased by $14,381 or 28%. The subsidy to Blessed Trinity Academy declined $16,221 as several one-time costs were incurred in the prior fiscal year. Consequently, we continue to be in a Net Operating Deficit - $(113,888) compared to $(115,728) last year. This means we will again rely on Parish Share contributions to significantly exceed our assessment of $144,000 in order to cover this cash deficit. As you know, masses in the church were suspended following the weekend of March 14/15. Given the COVID – 19 pandemic impact on everyone, we have seen a decline in the rate of offertory contributions since that time of approximately 19%. As Fr. Tim has previously communicated, actions were taken to reduce personnel expense. The parish has applied for a loan under the Paycheck Protection Program (part of the CARES Act legislation). If approved, the loan requires us to restore employees to their pre – COVID employment status and should cover payroll and utilities for a period of eight weeks, resulting in loan forgiveness. We continue to closely monitor cash flow. Many thanks for your ongoing support of the parish! Transparency of our financial situation becomes even more critical during this period. Frequent updates will be provided as a result. If you have any questions, you may send them to ParishFinanceCouncil@stmaryglenshaw.org. As a reminder, donations may be mailed in, drop in the rectory door slot, or made online at www.stsmaryandursula.org. Thank you for your continued support!

St. Mary of the Assumption Parish Financial Summary

Parish financial results for the first nine months from July 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020 compared to the same period last year are: Operating revenues decreased $8,722, or 2%. Offertory collections were higher by $20,714 or 6%. The increase in the offertory is a result of a very significant, generous donation in September. Without that donation, offertory would have declined. This increase was more than offset by decreases in donations and bequests, as no bequests have been received in the current fiscal year, and in hall rental income, which was significantly higher last year. Operating expenses were higher by $8,590 or 2%. The increase was due largely to higher operations and maintenance expenses (including new steps and some paving in the lower parking lot), and higher compensation. The custodian position was vacant during part of the prior year period, and initially filled on a part time basis. This increase was partially offset by lower rectory costs and lower CCD costs. The gross operating surplus decreased by $17,312, or 33%. The subsidy to Blessed Trinity Academy (BTA) was $50,000, compared to $52,500 in the prior fiscal year. The total subsidy for the full year will be $75,000, the same as the prior year. The difference from last year is due to timing of payments. The net operating deficit was $(14,987) compared to $(175) last year. As you know, masses in the church were suspended following the weekend of March 14/15. Given the COVID – 19 pandemic impact on everyone, we have seen a decline in the rate of offertory contributions since that time of approximately 29%. Transparency of our financial status is critical at this time. Frequent updates will be provided. As a reminder, donations may be mailed in, drop in the rectory door slot, or made online at www.stsmaryandursula.org. Thank you for your continued support!

Also included is a DVD about Mary’s promises given at Fatima. What a great Mother we have, honor and “enthrone” her at home. The FORMED website also has wonderful movies about Mary.

There is a blue bin outside the church doors at St. Mary, on the cemetery side. There are resources available for use. Just added are free rosaries and prayers to Mary for the month of May.

Confessions In compliance with Governor Wolf's mandate on social distancing, Bishop Zubik has decided to allow the Sacrament of Reconciliation to begin taking place in churches.

Both St. Mary and St. Ursula will have Parking Lot Confessions at 11:00 am on Saturdays. Please follow the social distancing and confidentiality of others by adhering to the directions given.

Mass Intentions The scheduled Mass Intentions are being said during the live stream masses and during the private masses being said by our priests.

Live Stream Masses Mass is live streamed every day at 9:00 am. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday is at St. Mary. Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday is at St. Ursula. Sundays alternate sites. Join us live on our website or Facebook!

The Memorare Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that any one who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful; O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me, Amen.
