PARSHA QUESTIONS BAMIDBAR BY: THE RAV
First Aliyah: (1:2) Was the census taken here a head count, as the pasuk implies, or was it done by shekel donations, as in Parshas Ki Tisa? Second Aliyah: (1:47‐49) Why does the command to not count the Levi’im come after the Torah has already told me that they weren’t counted? Third Aliyah: (2:2) What is a degel, and what is its purpose? Fourth Aliyah: (3:12) Why did the Levi’im replace the first‐born? Fifth Aliyah: (3:39) Why is the number of Levi’im, 22,000, so much smaller than all the other tribes? Sixth Aliyah: (3:45) Why did the exchange made between the first‐born and the Levi’im include their animals? Seventh Aliyah: Why aren’t the laws of how to cover the Mishkan utensils listed in Parshas Terumah with all the other Mishkan specifications?

NOTICE REGARDING CHILDERN
It is a wonderful minhag to spend Leil Shavuos learning Torah. The following measures will help ensure the safety of our chil‐dren, the Kedusha of Shavuos, and the security of our building: Children who are not old enough to learn throughout the night should stay home. Any child under the age of 14 who remains in the Shul must stay with their parent. Young people who congregate in the rear lobby and parking lot and refuse to participate in learning programs will be asked to leave the Shul premises. We appreciate the cooperation of all parents.

THIS WEEK’S SHIURIM @ THE BAYT AT A GLANCE
“Weekly Halachah—Parshas Bamidbar / Shavuos R’ Mordechai Torczyner – torczyner@torontotorah.com
If I stay up all night on Shavuos, do I recite Birchos haTorah for the first day of Shavuos?
We are required to recite Birchos haTorah (Hebrew/English Artscroll Siddur pg. 16) before studying Torah. Reciting these berachos in the morning fulfills our requirement for the entire day.
Regarding one who stays up all night: On the one hand, one has not halted the effect of his previous day's berachos by sleeping. On the other hand, Birchos haTorah could be viewed as a daily requirement. Because of this uncertainty, one who stays up all night should hear Birchos haTorah recited by someone else, after alos hashachar (halachic dawn).
One who does not have the option of hearing Birchos haTorah from someone else should view the berachah of Ahavah Rabbah before the morning Shema as Birchos haTorah, keeping this in mind while reciting the words of Ahavah Rabbah.
One who naps in bed for more than 30 minutes on Erev Shavuos, and then stays up all night, may recite Birchos haTorah in the morning after alos hashachar.

A SHAVUOT MESSAGE FROM THE RAV
The specialness of Shavuos and the 6th of Sivan are related, of course, to the seven preceding weeks of counting. Shavuos is thus an extension of Pesach and the culmination of the Exodus experience. But R’ Yitzchak Zeller in his Yalkut Yitzchak tells us that there is an even earlier antecedent that infuses this day with importance. It was the day that, 80 years prior to the Exodus, Yocheved placed baby Moshe into a basket and left him on his own in the Nile (do the math: If Moshe was born on 7 Adar, and Yocheved couldn’t hide him after 3 months, it works out).
This is one of the reasons that we place greenery in our shuls and homes on Shavuos, to remind us of the bulrushes at the side of the Nile that protected Moshe and allowed Miriam to spy him from afar. It is also one of the reasons for eating dairy products on Shavuos, because Pharaoh’s daughter, Bithya, Moshe’s adoptive mother, was able to find a Jewish wet nurse for Moshe on this day, when he refused to nurse from anyone else. This miracle of the “milk” is something we remember by eating dairy!
I believe that the connection to Moshe’s birth and his subsequent miraculous sustenance is such an important lesson specifically for Shavuos. It’s the holiday of Kabbalas HaTorah, but we receive the Torah not just for ourselves, but for our children and grandchildren as well. Sometimes, in order for our children to be inculcated with a proper Torah education, we have to leave them in a basket on the Nile. That is, we need to be selfless and self‐sacrificing to make sure that they get all they need by way of a Jewish education. Instead of smothering them, instead of trying to protect them from the rigor of dual curriculums and hours of homework, we need to let our children struggle with the labor of Torah.
Yes, it’s good to always be peering through the bulrushes, as Miriam did, to make sure that they are studying well, and to reassure them that they’ll always have a safety net when necessary. But in order for our children to thrive, in order for them to realize their destiny, we must all relinquish a little bit of our protective instincts and allow them to work hard and fend for themselves.
May our children always taste the sweetness of this struggle in their schools and homes.
Karen and I wish you a joyous and delicious Chag.
