Past, Present and Future

Industrial history of Llanelli: coal-mining,

iron and steel, subsidiary

industries, shipping and trade, ship-building and the

maritime life.

The Llanelly Steel Works was established in 1898 the works finally closed in 1981 when the company went bankrupt.

We collected old photographs of Llanelli and then used these to draw what we saw. It looked very dusty in those days and very

different to the Sandy Water Park we see today.

It looks like hard work. I don’t know if

I would want to work in this

building. It must have been hot and very dangerous.

Sandy Water Park is on the western edge of Llanelli where this heavy industry once thrived.

The site was acquired in 1986 and developed into a water park by the then Llanelli Borough Council.

I had a big shock when I saw this change. I can’t

believe how different it looks.

Today a memorial to the steel workers stands on a mound overlooking the lake on one side and the Burry Estuary on the other. It was designed to represent a stack of ingots as would have been cast in the steel processing of the time

We went on a walk of our locality and took lots of

photographs. We then came back to class and painted

what we saw.

Today lots of people visit Llanelli on

holiday. This would not have happened when we had all the

factories.

Llanelli is a nice place to live

because we are by the beach.

I like going on a walk down the beach or

sometimes I go on my bicycle.

I think the future will be good for Llanelli as long as we look

after land and wildlife. We may add things like solar power and wind energy to stop pollution. I

think this would be a good think for the future.

What changes can we expect to see in the future?

These were our ideas:

windmills solar energy less pollution

electric cars peace and quiet

lots of plants clean water jobs

We need to talk out and make sure adults do not

destroy our future.
