SJ Adoration in Church 9:30-10:30 am and 7-8 pm
We tend to think of crosses as burdens,
things - and people! - that and who demand so much
energy and time from us. We see our sufferings and our
brokenness as "crosses" that condemn us to unfulfilled
lives and unrealized dreams. Most days we would like to
lay those crosses aside and never pick them up again.
But our real crosses - the crosses God places on our
shoulders and Christ bears with us - are sources of
hope, of joy, of discovery, of life, of resurrection, for
both others and ourselves. Discipleship means to take up
whatever crosses are laid upon our shoulders knowing
that, with the love of God within us, we can transform
every Good Fridays into Easter joy.

Pastoral Care Area (PCA) notes from the May 24th meeting at St. Mary’s/St. Peter’s Church.
Included in this week’s bulletin you will find a Communication
to Parishioners note from the PCA. The PCA is looking for
suggestions from you, the parishioners, and invite you to
reach out to your parish representatives.
Posted at the exits of church are the minutes from the May
24th meeting.
For the next few weeks we will include a bulletin blurb about
PCA’s for you. This information can also be found on the
Diocesan website.
I. Pastoral Care Area is a group of collaborating parishes. Generally, a PCA is formed by geographically related parishes constituted to engage in pastoral planning for their territory and people. A PCA may include individual parishes, linkages, clusters and parish-mission combinations. PCA planning groups are encouraged to work together to achieve the highest quality of pastoral programs, mutual clergy/staff support, economies of scale, and to engage the work of local pastoral planning. Planning groups may involve representatives of other diocesan
or area ministries important within the PCA. [i.e. representa-
tives of colleges, health care facilities, prison chaplains, etc.]
If you missed Mass during the week, our weekly
bulletin is published on the website (in color)!

From Diocese of Syracuse to inform Catholics about Issues of Religious Freedom
Straight Talk About…
Supreme Court Victory for Religious Freedom
On May 16, the Supreme Court issued its long-awaited ruling on the HHS Mandate cases that involved the Little
Sisters of the Poor, several Catholic dioceses, and a number of other Christian organizations. It is a bit of a
disappointment that the Court didn't rule explicitly on the merits of the religious liberty issues, and the case will
linger on for a while in the lower courts. Still, given the divisions in the Court after the death of Justice Scalia, this
decision is considered a major victory.
The Court unanimously decided to send the cases back to the Circuit Courts, which had previously issued split
decisions on the cases. The Supreme Court instructed the lower courts to work out a resolution that would
ensure that the religious non-profits would not have to do anything to facilitate the provision of morally offensive
services beyond contracting with their insurance company for a policy that excludes them. That will then permit
the government to come up with a way to ensure that the services are still offered to the employees of the non-
profits. Most important, the Court also ruled that the religious non-profits could not be fined or penalized by the
government for taking their stand in defense of their religious liberties even though the government exempts 1 in
3 Americans from the HHS mandate already. It exempts large corporations such as Exxon, Visa and even the
government’s own military family plan—for reasons other than as an expression of religious freedom.
There are a Couple of Crucial Take-Aways from this
All along, the argument by the religious non-profits
has been that they don't want to be involved in
providing abortion and contraception services that
they find morally offensive.
This ruling vindicates that argument, and sends a
clear signal to the government that they can't force
religious people to violate their religious beliefs by
threatening them with ruinous fines.
The ruling also makes clear that it is not the
business of the government or the courts to tell
people when their religious beliefs at burdened by
law.
The Court’s decision is a direct rebuke to the lower
courts who sub substituted their judgement about
Catholic and Christian beliefs for the plaintiffs.
The government has not been told in no uncertain
terms that they have to be more accommodating of
religious belief, and more creative in coming up with
ways to achieve their goals without burdening
religious beliefs.
The government's parsimonious view of religious
freedom has now been dealt its fourth consecutive
major blow -- starting with the Hosanna Tabor case,
through Hobby Lobby, and now with Zubik, the
Court is sending a clear message that the
constitutional recognition of religious freedom has to
be given special weight when it is negatively
impacted by government policies.
This is a Major Victory for Religious Freedom James Madison, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson would be proud
Communication to Parishioners May 2016
Dear Parishioners:
The following are the minutes from the May pastoral care area at St. Mary’s/St. Peter’s
The first idea which has been discussed is communicating to members what is being done for you at a
parish and diocese level. The committee has decided to share the minutes with you.
People need to have information in the bulletin. In the future it may be needed to collect emails and cell
phone numbers to provide information which will be relevant to parish life. People should explore their
own parish website/Facebook or the Diocese web site which provides detail information about past
road shows and inspirational videos. Pastors will provide blurbs to help educate as we continue to grow
through the process of coming together as one faith community.
One of the great things which the group has been working on is the collaboration of the directors of
religious education. All the parishes are in contact with one another in the form of communication and
there is a sense of togetherness. They have worked on combining retreats and vacation bible school.
Students are welcomed from all parishes to receive their religious education.
Ideas are being considered on having a joint Reconciliation Mass and Confirmation Mass.
Members are enthusiastic that they will be able to adapt when changes need to be made but also
cautious that some change may not be needed.
A goal everyone agrees is to continue to be a welcoming faith community and try to accommodate
everyone’s spiritual needs. We need to look at how to inspire current members, to find way to bring
back lost Catholics, and to help post Confirmation candidates be active members in their parish.
The priests have worked together on making changes to where daily mass will take place. There is a
system in place if a priest is on vacation or at religious retreat. We have to understand that there are not
a lot of substitutes in the Eastern Region. More changes will have to take place if attendance is
decreasing at specific mass or if a priest retires.
We would like to have suggestions from parishioner on what they would like to see accomplished in the
near future. Please give your comment to a representative at your parish:
