Fulfillment or The Embrace, 1909, oil on canvas

Klimt was an Austrian Symbolist painter and a leading figure in the Vienna Secessionist art movement. This group of artists rejected the confines of academic tradition in favor of experimentation and expressive use of the formal language of art. Their work was often patterned and decorative.

EDOUARD VUILLIARD1868-1940

Vuillard belonged to a group of late 19th century French artists called the Nabis. Nabi means prophet in Hebrew and Arabic. They chose an appropriate name since they were leaders in a movement in a new style of painting that drew from Impressionism but emphasized non-realistic color and bold and flattened pattern. They made representational but design- oriented work, recalling 19th century Japanese prints.

Apply skills learned from previous lessons including modified contour drawing, proportion, positive and negative space and value.

Concepts introduced: placement and proportion of the features of the head, creation and

use of pattern in a portrait, analogous color scheme, transparent versus opaque application of watercolor medium (values in color)

Students use handouts to practice proportion of head and features, practice drawing

frontal view. Demo proportion on frontal view head. Demo watercolor wash using Analogous colors.

After students use handouts to practice drawing frontal view of heads, they will create a

very light watercolor wash on paper surface using only Analogous color scheme. This watercolor wash will be used to trace final portrait from practice drawings. The color will then be used to identify the animal portraits and use of patterns.

Using tracing paper, mirror and portrait template. Students draw their portraits using

modified contour. This will count as one grade for the portrait project. Final drawing of head transferred onto 12 x 16 inch paper using light box or tracing paper.

Visual Art 1Assignment: Portrait in Pattern

Students will use various patterns from sheets provided to accentuate the positive and/or negative space of the portrait. Patterns will be used to enhance the features of the portrait, patterns can overlap into negative to contrast the line portrait drawing. Students will use image files to incorporate an animal of their choice into their portrait. The animal can be morphed into a portion of the face and will engage the background. Animals will need to include patterns. Students will need to make creative choices to create an interesting background using pattern and animal.

Students after being introduced to analogous color scheme will apply this to

portrait and to patterns.

Students will use pen and ink (or fine point sharpie) to do final outline of portrait.   Show evidence of care and effort to produce a creative, original work of art   Artwork clearly reflects the influence of artists from powerpoint such as Adriana

Czernin, Edward Vuillard, Kahinde Wiley, Mickalene Thomas, Yinka Shonibare and Patrica Ariel based on visuals displayed and discussed in class

Artwork expresses a complete idea and is completed by due date June 18th.

Materials: White paper, 12 x 16 inches, drawing pencils, pen and ink, watercolor, texture resources, mirrors.
