Update on GIS Inventory

Our priorities• Create a seamless, standardized regional GIS dataset

of pedestrian facilities for the nine-county region• Collect the following features & attributes

■ Sidewalk centerlines○ line created if sidewalk is present○ use street centerlines and existing inventories to guide data

collection

■ Curb ramps○ point placed at center of curb ramp/end of sidewalk

■ Crosswalks○ line created where crosswalks exist or should exist

■ Trails

Update on GIS Inventory

Update on GIS Inventory

Attributes• Sidewalk centerlines

■ no attributes related to existing condition at this time (if it didn’t already exist)

• Curb ramps■ if curb ramp is distinguishable using aerial imagery, it is

indicated as present, if not, it is marked for review■ location of curb ramp (diagonal/non-diagonal)

• Crosswalks■ marking type (unmarked, parallel, ladder, etc.)

Update on GIS Inventory

Update on GIS Inventory

Challenges with GIS inventory• Standards for pedestrian data don’t exist• Stitching together and standardizing existing

inventories• Limitations on what’s visible using aerial imagery• Sources of aerial imagery aren’t the same across the

region• At this time, nothing is ground-truthed• No structure in place to allow for regular updates and

maintenance of data

Pedestrian Facilities and Planning Portal Kickoff Meeting

What’s the Web Portal?

Goals• Provides access to and accommodate maintenance

and enhancement of the pedestrian facilities inventory by interested entities

• Create a shared space to promote existing walking initiatives across the region and engage the public

• Provide a space to promote and share our pedestrian successes

• Allow municipal, county, regional, and state planning partners to share their pedestrian facility priorities■ Vertical collaboration!

What’s the Web Portal?

PennDOT Connects“Find creative solutions to sustain and expand mobility throughout the Commonwealth”

What’s the Web Portal?

Benefits• More walkable communities• More efficient priority setting• Improved decision-making• Greater regional transparency• Lower costs of maintaining valuable data• Enhanced outreach and community involvement• Increased likelihood of cost-effective implementation• Significant competitive advantage for future grant

funding
