OHS students readying for ‘Fiddler’ opening nightBy Lauren Beach

Fifty Oakwood students com-prise the cast of the Oakwood HighSchool spring musical, Fiddler onthe Roof. Set in 1905, the storytakes place in Anatevka, a smallJewish village in Russia. The plotrevolves around the dairymanTevye and his attempts to preservehis family’s traditions in a changingworld.

This year’s musical is directedby 27-year-old University ofDayton graduate, Michael Wadham. He says the choice of “Fiddler” asthis year’s musical was not hardbecause of the number of actorsneeded to play main roles. Anotherreason for choosing “Fiddler” wasthat both the students and audiencecould relate to the musical’s themes.Cami Brewer is the stage manager, and senior Michelle Lynch is assis-tant stage manager.

One of the things Wadham did inpreparation for the musical was setaside one day of rehearsal, called‘History Day’, to allow the studentsto learn about the background andhistory of the musical. Wadhamsays ‘History Day’ enable the castto emotionally connect and under-stand their roles.

“Fiddler on the Roof” is a musi-cal written by Jerry Bock andSheldon Harnick as well as a bookwritten by Joseph Stein, both adapt-ed from the 1894 tales written bySholem Aleichem. Wadham
