PerimeterHow do we find the perimeter of a

quadrilateral?

Standards: M5P3, M5P4, and M5A1c

Key Vocabulary

• Vertex – the point where two sides of a polygon meet

• Triangle – a polygon made up of three line segments

• Square – A quadrilateral with four right angles and four congruent sides

• Quadrilateral – a four sided figure• Polygon – a closed figure with three or more

sides

How do we find the PERIMETER of a quadrilateral?

• Perimeter – the distance around a plane figure

How do you think that you would find the perimeter of this figure?

Finding the perimeter

• You may find the sum of all the sides• You may also use a formula for rectangles:• P stands for perimeter• L stands for length• W stands for width• P = 2 × l + 2 × w• 2L + 2w

Find the perimeter of a square

• A square has four congruent sides, meaning that a square has four sides that all have the same length.

• P = perimeter• S = side• Then, the formula for finding the perimeter of

a square is:• P = 4s

Finding the Missing Length

Sometimes problems will give you theperimeter, but you must work backwards to findthe missing length. This means that you willhave to know the attributes of a shape.

Find the missing measurement.

22ft

P = 62 ft
