What is Personality?
Have you ever heard someone refer to someone’s personality? How were the references made?
Maybe it was said that they have a great personality, or that they could be more friendly
Personality is the combination of characteristics that makes you different from every other person– We often summarize someone’s personality with
words (ex: outgoing, aggressive, happy, funny)• Would you say that personalities are more complex than a word?
What is Personality?
Personality Components– There are three categories: emotional, social, and intellectual
• Your heredity and environment both affect these components
Emotional– Everyone feels the same basic emotions (happy, sad, fearful), but
everyone responds to them differently Social
– How people relate to others and act around them Intellectual
– Influenced by the mind and how it works All of these become apparent through behavior
– You must get to know someone first before you label their personality
• Someone may be quiet in class, but very outgoing in a social setting
What impacts your personality?
Self-Esteem is the value, or importance, you place on yourself– It can be high, low, or
somewhere in between– Many things affect your
self-esteem• Success, thoughts about
strengths and weaknesses, or the way people react to you
– Your self-esteem will fluctuate from time to time
Self-Concept is how you define who you are– Sometimes called self-
image or self-identityTo help develop your
self-concept, focus on your strengths rather than your weaknesses – Danger comes with
hearing and believing negative messages
What impacts your personality?
Self-esteem and self-concept also influence your behavior, well-being, and your personality
When you feel good about yourself, you have more confidence- this will show in your personality
High self-esteem and concept enables you to make the best of your life without becoming arrogant and without harming others
Ways to Boost Your Self-Esteem
Learn to accept praise– People praise because you
deserve it…don’t put yourself or your accomplishment down
Focus on your strengths– Everyone is good at
SOMETHING Accept yourself as you
are– You are not perfect and
you have flaws…your friends aren’t perfect either and you accept them, so accept yourself!
Learn from what you do– See mistakes as learning
experiences– Don’t label yourself as a
failure Use your strengths to help
others– You will feel better by
using your strengths to help others
Take responsibility for your own life– Learn how to deal with and
manage demands placed upon you
Realizing Your Potential
Potential is the capability of becoming something more than you are right now…you are working on your personal development
Everyone is born with potential…it is just a matter of you discovering what you can do with it
You can become sidetracked with your potential through attitudes and circumstances
Don’t fill your life with regrets about things that you could have done or accomplished
The Decision Making Process
This process is used to help you make the best choice when faced with a decision.
You should base your decision on your values and beliefs, as well as using your self concept and self esteem.
It lets you focus on what is important to you, and helps you to avoid negative outcomes
The Decision Making Process
1. Identify the decision to be made– Being clear about the issue will produce clear
outcomes
2. List all possible outcomes– Even if they might produce negative outcomes, you
need to make yourself aware of what could happen
3. Evaluate the pros and cons of each option– Don’t forget to include everyone who would be
affected by your decision…not just yourself
The Decision Making Process
4. Make a choice– From your list of options, select the one that will
have the most positive outcome
5. Act on your decision– Gather your resources and carry out the plan
6. Evaluate your choice– Check out the results…was it the best choice? What
would you do differently next time? Take responsibility for the results.
