PHENOLS:
Phenols are the compounds containing _OH group directly attached to the an aromatic ring i.e benzene ring
Phenols are firstly extracted from the coal tar. Pure phenols are colorless liquids or solids Phenols have characteristic carbolic odor It is mildly acidic in nature
DERIVATIVES OF PHENOLS: Bisphenol A Alkyl-phenols Choloro-phenols Salicylic acid Nitro phenol Hydroxyphenol Bakelite
USES OF PHENOL: Phenols sprays are anesthetic and analgesic
combinations that work in the painful and irritating areas.
Phenols used to relieve pain caused by sore throat. It is used in insulating materials, paints , rubber , inks
, dyes It is used in illuminating gasses ,perfumes, soaps and
toys
BISPHENOL A :
Used to produce epoxy resins for paints caotings and mouldings and in polycarbonate palastics, fimiliar CDs and domestic electrical appliances.
ALKYLPHENOLS:
. These compounds are used in the manufacture of surfactants, detergents and emulsifiers, and also in insecticide and plastics production
CHLORO-PHENOLS Used in medical antiseptics and bactericides
such as TCP and Dettol. Also used in fungicides for timber preservation and as additives to inhibit microbial growth in many products; used to manufacture a range of pesticides.
SALICYLIC ACID
This is used in the production of aspirin and other pharmaceuticals
HYDROXYPHENOL: It is used as creams for discoloration of skin
NITROPHENOL: It is used in manufacturing of drugs It is used in agrochemicals and as in
fungicides.
BAKELITE: It is used in hip joint replacement
parts ,pacemakers and cataract lenses. It is used in manufacturing of rotary-dial
telephones ,radio sets and guitars.
