HUMANISM

emphasizes people’s intrinsic capacities for personal growth

and their abilities and desires to control their own destinies

2 basic components of learning

(1) the acquisition of information

(2) the individual’s personalization and internalization of that information

REALISM

Objects exist whether or not the human mind perceives it.

Knowledge comes via the senses.

DISCIPLINISM

• Moral development• Formation of desirable

habits

RATIONALISM

Human reason was the sole source of knowledge and the sole determiner whether things or actions were acceptable or not.

NATURALISM

focuses on natural development of children’s abilities

NATURAL STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT

EMILE (Jean Jacques Rosseau)

education of boys and girls

Underlined the importance of each gender’s roles in the society

“Man, as a natural being, has innate goodness; but became evil through contact with society.”

(Jean Jacques Rosseau)

IDEALISM

Much of its thrust is to preserve cultural traditions

Education is largely a matter of passing on to the young the nation’s cultural heritage.

There is great concern for morality and character development.

1. The first rule to be learned is order.2. Students must conform to rules and

regulations and repress everything that interferes with the function of the school.

3. Pupils must have their lessons ready on time, rise and sit at a given signal, learn habits of silence and cleanliness.

(docility, conformity and subservience)

PRAGMATISM

• favors practicality and literal truth

• practical consequences are the criteria of knowledge and meaning and value

FUNCTIONAL KNOWLEDGE

• Knowledge is what works.

PROGRESSIVISM

• to provide the learner the necessary skills to be able to interact with his ever changing environment.

PROGRESSIVISTS’ PRINCIPLES

Knowledge leads to growth and development of life-long learners who actively learn by doing.

EXISTENTIALISM

focuses on the existence of the individual

People are responsible for defining themselves.

“Existence precedes essence.”

John-Paul Sartre

ESSENTIALISM

• focuses on what is essential

• back to basics (3Rs)
