Letter of the Week: Hh
Phonics: consonant clusters: when 2 or 3 consonants are together, and we hear each letter’s sound: tr, gr, pr, sl, spl, str, etc
Weekly Words: here, said, up
Reading Strategy: Good readers listen to and think about what they are reading. They ask themselves, “Does that look right?” “Does that sound right?” “Does that make sense?” Theme: Construction (in all of its forms, buildings, making clothing, music, dance, cooking)
Read Aloud: Houses and Homes by Ann Morris Other Books your might enjoy: Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty Alphabet Under Construction by Denise Fleming
Conversation Starters: Here are some questions to ask: o What is the book Houses and Homes by Ann
Morris about? o What types of houses does the book describe?
(Talk about the types of houses you know about and/or have lived in.)
o Is there a difference between a house and a home? What is the difference?
Fun things to learn about together: At school, we are reading Houses and Homes by Ann Morris. What other books did she write? Visit the library or go online to find out. Are there any similarities between Houses and Homes and her other books? Make a list.
Focus 3.3: Construction, Homes
Dear Families: We starting to learn about construction. Try at least three of these fun learning activities, or do them all! The most important thing is to enjoy time with your child learning about what’s happening in the classroom. Please color in the boxes of the activities you choose. HAVE FUN!
Language: Construction
Think about ways that you construct at home. Do you like to cook? Do you write music? Have you put together a piece of furniture with directions? Do you know how to fix your car? Share your favorite way to construct with your child! They can watch, or even help!
Science: Recycled Buildings
Draw plans for a building you want to make. Use cereal and other clean boxes, toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, plastic bottles, paper cups, tape, and glue. Make your building. (See activity below before you begin constructing.)
Language and Literacy:
Foreman Says…
One child wears a construction hat and, like in Simon Says, calls out commands, such as “Foreman says...dig with a shovel.” “Foreman says, hammer a nail,” “Drive a truck,” “Saw a stilt,” etc. Other players move only when the child in charge begins with, “Foreman says...”
Literacy Night and Home Links , March 10th
Save the Date! Come to school at 4:30 on March 10th for a special family Home Links night just for K2, then stay for the rest of the Literacy Night!
Gross Motor: Choreography
Choreograph a song you like and practice it at home. You can dance by yourself or with someone else. You can draw the steps of your dance or you can video it.
Math: Equations
Find the math in whatever you’re doing at home. Putting the toys away? 2 trucks + 2 cars = 4 toys! Cleaning the table after dinner? 5 plates – 2 = 3 plates. We are starting to talk about story problems, where the children will need to be able to write both addition and subtraction equations for a story. Talking about it while you do your normal day-‐to-‐day would help a lot!
