Advantages Photos also can motivate readers. Adds personal relevance. Adds visual details. Retains to the reader. Can demonstrate developments.

Limitations Not ideal for comparing values. Cannot depict mechanisms.

PARTS OF A PHOTOGRAPH

Picture The image that the reader views.

Caption Captions are titles that highlight or

describe visuals, such as photographs.

Callouts Texts that appear within the illustration

itself. In photographs, it is called label.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines for Photographs Only use color when color adds value. Indicate the relative size of the subject. Remove non-pertinent items from the

background.

Guidelines for Captions Give the illustration a unique caption. Should not give information found in

the text or photograph. Should not provide unnecessary

background information. Use longer and more descriptive

captions for a lay audience than those for a purely technical or scientific audience.

Guidelines for Captions (Contd.) Write the caption as a noun.

Guidelines for Callouts Make it visible. Where possible, keep the line straight.

APPLICATIONS

Figure 1. Interior of Canteen.

It was suggested that the interior of the canteen should be wider.

Figure 2. Front left(A), front right(B), back (C) and left side (D) Entrance of Canteen.

The four entrances of the canteen are positioned perfectly because each and every entrance is very accessible to the students.

Figure 3. Eating area at the left (A) and right (B) of the canteen.

The eating areas are unorganized and there’s a need of more cleaners .
