LAND OWNER OBJECTIVES

Social Goals

The Mi’kmaq people have an affinity for the forest, and the natural bounty of that forest, which is founded deep in their history and culture. Consequently, the Pictou Landing Community sees their woodland primarily as a social resource. It is their wish to use the forest to maintain and enhance this inherent connection of the people and traditions with the natural environment.

Economic Goals

The Community expects the forest to provide economic benefits where and when resource extraction does not negatively impact the cultural and aesthetic quality of the forest.

FOREST MANAGEMENT OBJECTIVESThe objectives of the band are to be accomplished by restoring the forest, over time, to “Acadian Forest” condition.

In 1999, Pictou Landing’s 1,025 acre woodlot became the first Aboriginal land in Canada to be certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC). The FSC promotes environmentally friendly and socially responsible woodlot management on a world wide basis. The goals include managing the band’s woodlot for trees, wildlife and people. Folks who buy FSC-Certified wood products can be assured they come from a healthy forest.

Netukulimk is the Mi’kmawey concept of harvesting resources without jeopardizing the integrity, diversity nor the productivity of the environment.

This is no small accomplishment. In fact it is huge. It is something that the Federal and Provincial Governments have yet to learn to do. It is a first in Nova Scotia. It is an accomplishment first among the First Nations of Canada. It puts the Pictou Landing First Nation in the lead and as part of a group recognized the world over as the best.
