“BÜYÜK TÜRK DENİZCİSİ VE KARTOGRAFYA BİLGİNİ PİRİ REİS”

(D. : 1470? Ö. : 1552) Hint Kaptanlığı: 1547-1552

16.yüzyıl dünya pozitif bilim tarihinin önemli şahsiyetlerinden biri olan Türk amirali, coğrafya ve kartoğrafya bilginidir. Büyük

eseri “Bahriye”nin yanı sıra Amerika Kıtası ve Atlas Okyanusu’nu gösteren 1513 ve 1528 haritalarıyla da büyük ün kazanmıştır. 1547 yılında Hint Kaptanlığı’na atanıp Kızıldeniz,

Basra Körfezi ve Umman Denizi’nde deniz harekatı icra etmiştir. 1551 yılındaki Hürmüz Harekatı’ndan dolayı haksız

yere suçlanarak başarısız sayılmış ve Kahire’de idam edilmiştir.

He is a Turkish admiral who is one of the important figures of the history of positive sciences in the 16th century a scholar

in geography and a cartographer. Besides his great work “Bahriye” (Book of Navigation), he is also famous with the

maps dated 1513 and 1528. These maps depict the American Continent and the Atlantic Ocean, In 1547 he was appointed as

the Admiral of the Ottoman fleet in the Indian Ocean and conducted naval operations in the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea. Owing to the operation conducted in Hormuz in

1551, he was accused unjustly and executed in Cairo.
