Essential Question:

How will the new standards implementation affect me as

a curriculum leader?

Norms for Today

• Our Work will be Messy• Our Work may not have Closure• Dialogue will create Understanding• Each Voice has Value

Standards Matter!

• They are the heart of our curriculum• Our materials support our core

learning standards, not the other way around• We would not be here having this

conversation today if standards did not matter

Today’s Outcomes:

1. Develop an understanding of the potential changes that the standards revision process will create.

2. Develop a deeper understanding of the new standards, grade level expectations, and student outcomes.

Uncovering the State Perspective

• Text Rendering Activity (Read pages 1-12 of the New Standards)– What practices might the state be trying to end?– What practices might the state be trying to begin?– What are the implications for our district?

• Chart Beginnings/Endings

Bridges’ Transitions Research

Consultancy Protocol

• What should curriculum accomplish?• What are the responsibilities for each group?– District– School– Teacher

• What structures could create greater sustainability?

• What did you hear? What didn’t you hear?

Educational Belief Systems

• Complete Survey –How might you be like your peers?–How might you be different from

Standards-Based Teaching/Learning Cycle

text section• Share the critical components of what you learned• As a leader, what are the implications of effectively

supporting teachers in using the Teaching/Learning Cycle?

Old/New ComparisonsOld & Gone Still There Added & New

CDE’s Comparisons

• Green indicates no significant difference between the revised grade level expectation and current objectives

• Yellow indicates that there is a change in some of the content from the current objectives to the revised grade level expectation

• Red indicates new content to the grade level

Thompson Frameworks

• Should we leave our Thompson Curriculum Frameworks behind?–What would be the implications?–Where do we need to spend our energy?–What should we “do” as a district?–What should be the grade level/course

outcomes in our district?

Activating Your Prior Knowledge

• What do you know about Essential Learnings or Power Standards?– Table Chat

• What do you know about Common Assessments?– Table Chat

• Large Group Share

Selecting Essential Learnings

• Does it have endurance? Do we really expect our student to retain the knowledge and the skills over time as opposed to merely learning it for a test?

• Does it have leverage? Will proficiency in this standard help the student in other areas of the curriculum and other academic disciplines?

• Does it develop student readiness for the next level of learning? Is it essential for success in the next unit, course, or grade level?

Discuss & Identify

• Which evidence outcomes in your grade/course are essential?–Discuss in small group–Share out with Large Group

Feb 3 District Wednesday

Knowing what you now know, what might be knowledge that our

teachers need to be prepared for the new Colorado State Standards and implementing them in a standards-

based teaching/learning cycle?
