Platypus Camp Foxhunt Instructions

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find the location of4 hidden foxes around the Platypus Camp. Yes, that means using those objects hidden under your keyboard to walk around the surrounding camp area.

The details of the hidden stationary foxes are as follows:• Fox 1: 433 Mhz approx – broadcasting a text message• Fox 2: 433 Mhz approx – broadcasting a text message• Fox 3: 433 Mhz approx – broadcasting an image• Fox 4: 433 Mhz approx – broadcasting data

Tips on locating the foxes:• You are welcome to work individually or in teams.• You will need an RTL SDR dongle to listen for the signals. If you 

do not have one, you can borrow one from the fox hunt desk. Please return it once you are finished.

• Tune to 433Mhz approx using a program such as GQRX on Linux or SDR#on Windows. If you do not have this software, it is on the PlatypusCon USB. We also have some bootable Kali USBs with the radio tools installed for you to borrow from the fox hunt desk (choose boot into “Persistence” mode). Again, please return these once you are finished.

• If you have not used these tools before, please ask us for a demo and we will be happy to show you. 

• It is recommended to use a directional antenna for 433Mhz e.g. a tape measure antenna. We have some examples at the fox hunt desk.

• Alternatively, if you have 2 handheld radios (e.g. baofeng radios),tune both to 433Mhz approx. Use one with an antenna attached to locate the rough location of a transmitting signal. Use a 2nd radio with no antenna attached, this will only tune to the signal once you are very very close to the fox.

• You can then walk around with your RTL SDR and try and find the location of the foxes.

When you find a fox:• Once you find the location of a fox, sign your name/team name and  

timestamp in the log sheet attached to the fox at that location. Take a photo for evidence if you like.

• Please do not open the box containing the fox. • Please do not move the foxes from their location (the equipment is 

more expensive than a typical fox hunt so we do not wish to loose them if they stop transmitting or run out of batteries). We will reset their locations ourselves during the activity. 

• It is optional to decode the signals being transmitted by the foxesbut it does earn extra bonus points. 

• If you wish to decode the signal, make a recording and analyse it at your leisure, then please come back to the fox hunt desk and sign your name/team name, timestamp and a description of the decoded message, these bonus points will be added to the log sheetsat the end of the activity.

• The winners will be announced at the end of the Camp.
