Steps for enabling and using multi-lingual website

a. Before start for enabling and using multi-lingual website, please Download, install and configure Po Edit Tool which is a free exe file tool.

b. It is for generation / modification of .po / .pot files and then launches the Po Edit tool (poedit-1.4.6-setup).

To translate equivalent Kannada word in .po/.pot files

i. http://vikku.info/indian-language-unicode-converter/kannada-unicode-converter.html or

ii. Make setting for input tools in gmail. iii. http://translate.google.co.in/#auto/kn

Section - I 1) First log-in into the ULB web-site with there login Id’s.

2) Now go to 'Translate Interface' option in ‘Site Building’

(Admin>Administer>Site Building-> Translate Interface).

3) Click on Export Button ----- Export All the Text group items and save in the local system a) Export the .po files for all the listed options (like Built-in-interface, Blocks, Content type, menu etc.) by selecting one at a time. b) Save the exported .po files on your local machine in a specific folder created for this translation purpose c) Repeat the steps (a) and (b) for the 'Export template' section as well.

4) Launch the Po Edit tool

5) File -> Open-> select any one .po file which is needed for translation for

Kannada i.e., of content /strings / menus/ blocks/built-in-interface etc.

6) Select a string (in English) which is required to be translated in Kannada

or any language.

7) In the bottom of the screen of the tool's window, we have one section having the selected string displayed in English and below that another section being blank. 8) In the second section, type the equivalent word (of the above English word) in the required language 9) Repeat the step (8) for all the required strings to be translated. 10) Finally click on File-> Save to save the modified / updated .po file. 11) After completing of all needed strings translated into equivalent word go to Translate Interface and click on 'Import' tab.

12) In the import page, in the Import Translation section, click on 'Browse'

button and then select the updated .po / .pot file.

a. Browse first file for Built in interface

b. Second file for Blocks

c. Third for CCK like etc for all text groups

For Eg: Browse first .po file and click on built in interface radio button.

Browse second .po file and click on Block radio button.

13) Set the 'Mode' as "Existing strings are kept, only new strings are

added".

14) Click on 'Import' Button.

15) Repeat the step 12 for 13 and 14 for all text groups (built in

interface/CCK/menu/content etc).

16) Now go to 'Refresh' tab. Select the all text groups (by checking the

check boxes against each) and then click on 'Refresh Strings’.

17) Again in ‘Refresh’ tab select Kannada language (by checking the check

box) and click on 'Update Translations' button.

18) Logout from the site

19) Refresh the website and see the reflected changes in the website in the

Kannada language.

Section – II For those strings which we are not able to do a translation with the Section – I have described. Follow the below mentioned procedure: (1) Login into the site, Go to Admin-> Site Building-> Translate Interface

(2) Click on 'Search' tab.

(3) Enter a string for which translation is required, which is a Case Sensitive.

(4) Select English as the option under the section Language.

(5) Select 'Both translated and un-translated strings' as the option for

search in.

(6) Limit to should be set as 'All text groups' and then click on search button.

(7) In the resulted screen, under the column 'Operations' click on edit

(8) In the resulted page enter a equivalent Kannada string, if the Kannada

string found empty.

(9) Save the translation.

(10)Go to 'Refresh' tab. Select the required text groups (by checking the

check boxes against each) and then click on 'Refresh Strings’

(11) Select the required language (by checking the check box) and click on

'Update Translations' button.

(12) Make sure you follow the below procedure for translating all menu

items .i.e. ., The following mentioned strings must be exactly the same

(including the case - lower/upper and along with the spaces and other

punctuation marks, if any ):-

(a) Title (b) Menu Link Title and (c) The actual menu item that is seen in the

page

13) Copy the String and paste the string in the edit menu item for ex.,

copy “City Council” and paste in site buildingmenus Menu link title

14) Repeat for all the string which has not translated.

Section – III To make any change in the blocks data i.e., City/ Town Summary or any newly created blocks by ULB Users. (1) Login into the site, Go to Administer->Site building-> Blocks Right/Left sidebar -> Configure Choose All Languages (Translatable) radio button in Language under Multilingual settings

(2) Login into the site, Go to Admin-> Site Building-> Translate Interface

(2) Click on 'Search' tab. (3) Enter to search “Population” String

(4) i) Click on edit Operation, then copy the Original text and paste in Kannada option text space. ii) Make equivalent Kannada string in Kannada option text space and press Save translates button.

(5) After Changing equivalent string click on string translation button and refresh the website to view the changes.

Section – IV Steps for enabling and using multi-lingual website for content: For each page/node we can translate the content in multi-lingual website. (1) Login into the site, Go to admin-> content management. (2)Go to Content types under Content management. (3) Click on edit and set the multilingual support radio button to “enabled, with translation” which is under Workflow settings.

(4) Go to any page/node (e.g. home page) and press edit button.

(5) Go to Languages, in which you will find a list of languages including

with a Language neutral by default.

(6)Choose English for English content page and Kannada for Kannada

content page from Language drop-down list, before which it will be

Language neutral.

(7) Add the Kannada/English content and save the page. (8) Now you will get one new Translate tab which is next to Outline tab.

(9) For all Kannada content pages type equivalent Kannada menu name in Menu link title.

(10) Press add translation in operations tab and now that page will be in published status.

(11) As there should be one page/node for each language. i.e., one page for English and one page for Kannada.

(12) Do the Kannada translation for Primary links. i.e., one page for English and one page for Kannada.

(13)Do the Kannada translation for General Information links. i.e., one page for English and one page for Kannada.

(14) Do the Kannada translation for City/Town Information links. i.e., one page for English and one page for Kannada.

(15) Each page can be distinguished by selecting Language drop down in edit mode and saved.

(16) Check now the difference when switch to the language toggled.
