portfolio : architecture

I believe architecture is an artform. My job is to let spaces speak for themselves. This approach requires a profound understanding of the design DNA in order to capture the ethos of the designer or architect. The fluidity of lines, the poetry of shapes and forms, and spac-es punctuted with lights and colour are what attracts me.

Upohar- The Condoville, Calcutta

Spread over 18 acres of sylvan settings, Upohar-The Condoville comprises of artistically crafted and tastefully designed apartments set amidst lush green open spaces. The Luxury towers, with apartments spanning 1200 sqft to 5500 sqft are equipped with dream facilities and services. The design ensures pri-vacy for every apartment, with a grand view of open greens and a jogging track for the health conscious- all in a traffic-free zone.

The client wanted a documentation of the property for a fine-art-catalogue styel book that would showcase the design ethos of the group. The book was meant to be presented to the residents as a gift. This called for a departure from the usual brochure style of architecture photography. I approached the space as an art installation and documented the property accordingly.

The club is part of the Upohar Condovile, a luxury gated community providing the residents with sports, leisure , wellness and business amenities.

Teardrops on Dust Residency, Calcutta

The bad boys of western dance, B-boying, met the elegance and sophistica-tion of Kathak as the two dance forms came together to form a new story and a language. Wilkie Branson (UK), Joel Daniel (UK), Mitul Sengupta (India) and Shiladitya Bose (India) came together to create a new, vibrant piece of work.

Kolkata saw the artists undertaking a residency for 15 days, during which they fought, understood, explained, researched, experimented; the frustra-tions and excitements of learning something new was prevalent. My job was to document the progress of the residency and interpret the nuances of the artistic process visually.

Client : British Council

A Private Party Pad, Calcutta

Located on the 18th, 19th and 20th floor of the Upohar Complex, the penthouse is the company guest house of Ambuja Neotia. Scenographer Swarup Dutta’s deign brief was to recycle old furniture in stock and give a rustic old world feel to the whole space.

Dutta wanted a documentation of this space for his website which would provide a voyeuristic point of view. The photography showcases that idea in order to provide a snippet of the space without revealing too much.

Assorted Editorial Work

Published in BBC Good Food, Marie Claire, Forbes, Open Magazine, Elle Decore, The Times of India, The Indian Express & BBC.

Jhaal Farezi, Calcutta

The whole idea is to celebrate Indie-chic with an art-dine experience catering to a urban ‘glocal’ clientele. The space provides a glimpse of a vibrant Indian pop culture which is increasingly becoming the new visual language. Graphic art has been predominantly used to establish this connection. It is an easygo-ing celebratory language of the urban Indian.

My brief was to create images for a teaser campaign. As such the challenge was to create interesting visuals that would excite the patrons enough, but not reveal much of the restaurant.

Visions of a Voyager : France and Sultanate of Oman

In early 2014, I was comissioned by Fawziya Saud Salim Bahwan to research, and shoot for a biography on her late father Sheikh Saud Bahwan- the famous business magnet and philanthrope of the Sultan-ate of Oman.

For a major part of his life, Saud Bahwan was based out of Paris. My brief was to document places of interest in Paris associated with the biography. I decided to shoot them in a way so as to give the images a vintage look as if shoot using a large format camera.

The rest of the book which focuses on Oman was shot in colour.

Cityscapes

On various trips across cities and continents I encountered spaces and structures which enthralled me. Colonial or modern; Christian or Islamic; night or day... these excited, inspired and ultimately showed me new ways of looking at things. Following is an montage from my personal album.
