Portsmouth City Primary Care

AllianceGILL HARRISON AND JAN MATTHEWS

Challenges to Primary Care Changing Health Needs -

Ageing population – more complex health needs

Alcohol and drug misuse, smoking, obesity

Larger organisations looking to become providers of primary care

Health inequalities among the population

Reducing income to practices

Individual practices working with limited resources

A Portsmouth Alliance

Working with member practices to develop a new model of primary care provision

Practices continue to provide day-to-day activities in their own way

Strength in numbers – more collective bidding for services demonstrates that primary care is working together

Potential to work with our neighbouring areas of Fareham and Gosport and South East Hants to deliver services.

Purpose / Intention of the Alliance

Primary care at scale

Working together, looking for economies of scale, sharing resources

General Medical Services +

Services over and above the day-to-day working of practices, looking to the wider intentions of the CCG

Working with practices, clusters and citywide to develop services

Being able to bid for pockets of money on behalf of practices when opportunities arise

How far have we got?

- consultations held with practices earlier this year with agreement that an Alliance was the way forward and that a Development Manager should be employed.

- CCG has given commitment to support Primary are Provision and the principle of an Alliance

- July 28th – Appointment of Development Project Manager

- On-going communication / consultations with practices, individuals, groups to enable discussions as to the way forward.

-Legal advice sort as to the options available – now back with practices / cluster groups for consideration as to what member practices would like the Alliance to look like.

What will the Alliance look like?

It will be shaped by member practices to reflect needs and priorities

On-going development will be an interactive process

As momentum picks up and resources become available it will grow

It can be fully flexible

It’s ready to act now!
