POSTNATAL GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT

DEFINITION• GROWTH The term growth denotes a net

increase in the size, or mass of the tissue. It is largely attributed to multiplication of cells and increase in the intracellular substance.

According to Liebert, Poulos and Marmor (1979)

• Development refers to a process of change in growth and capability over time, as function of both maturation and interaction with the environment.

POSTNATAL GROWTH

• Postnatal growth – growth occuring after birth.

SUMMARY

• The child (Tejasri – 1 year 9 months old girl) is in normal ranges for weight and height.

• Pre-lacteal feed is not given and she has been fed only on mother’s milk in the initial stages.

• Developmental milestones (gross motor , fine motor , language and social ) are consistent with age.

• No present illness is seen and immunisation schedule is being followed.

INTERVENTIONS

The nutritional needs of the child should be well looked at.

An adequate and balanced diet should be provided to the child which ensures the proper growth & development of the child.

Regular visits to the health centre for follow up on immunisation schedule and nutritional status monitoring is advised.

Developmental Milestones achieved should be well noticed to measure the growth of the child
