ENERGY MARKET SYSTEM

Powerful software for the complex requirements in energy data management gas

I believe there is no thrill that make a

man’s heart beat faster than the thrill

of inventing.

More than one third of all gas providers in

Germany have implemented BelVis EDM GAS

to gain a competitive edge in the liberalised

gas market. The reason – as proven by cus-

tomer satisfaction – is trust in BelVis and in

our extensive practical experience.

BelVis EDM GAS is also in operation in sev-

eral European countries.

Energy suppliers, faced with quickly chang-

ing structural modifi cations in the gas

market, rely on the continuing support of the

software industry. An independent market

survey has shown that all our BelVis clients

feel that they receive optimised support and

competent advice.

The fi rst ever radio connection.

James Clerk Maxwell’s discovery of

1864 and Heinrich Hertz’ experimental

verifi cation initially remained untapped:

The knowledge of the existence of radio

waves. But then, in 1893, Tesla caused

excitement in the scientifi c community.

A stage: On the one side a 5kVA supply

transformer connected to Leyden jars, a

spark gap, a spool and a wire leading to

the ceiling. And on the other – the receiver

side – another wire, jars and a spool. As

the transformer was activated, a bright

corona formed around the Leyden jars. But

more impressive was that which could not

be seen: the sending of an electromagne-

tic wave – something entirely new. Radio

technology was born.

Laws, regulations, and agreements have

resulted in a reform of many market rules

in energy markets all over the world. And

the process is not yet complete. Market

players are faced with modifi cations, new

requirements and standards every day. New

rules for data exchange, balancing, standard

load profi les or capacity calculation are

developed continuously.

That is why the right ‘time to market’ –

specifi cally in the gas sector – is currently

of particular importance when it comes

to the expansion of energy data manage-

ment. In BelVis, this is just one component

of product development within the scope

of software maintenance: market support

you should be able to expect from your

software partner. It clears the way for your

success and ensures the security of your

investment.

Implementation of market require-ments in BelVis EDM GASCurrent market requirements, e.g. format

changes, are implemented contemporary in

BelVis EDM GAS. It supports the handling

of standard load profi les gas in accordance

with current guidelines, the management of

balancing group and framework contracts,

nomination and allocation, calculation of

differences and reconciliation values, and

much more. Interfaces to common gas

meters and remote meter reading are of

course available.

BelVis has the capability for market com-

munication in EDIFACT and further inter-

national formats. A fall-back on external

providers for the handling of market com-

munication is made superfl uous by BelVis.

The data model in BelVis EDM GAS: market-conform and close to realityNew roles and contractual relationships

emerge for the market participants all along.

All of the specialist knowledge of BelVis EDM

GAS is contained in the master data of the

individual instances, their assignments, and

in the time series stored in them. The BelVis

data model interlinks the market participants

and their contractual relationships with the

gas networks and their physical character-

istics. Gas year and gas day are of course

considered throughout.

Market participants

All required time series are stored automati-

cally for each market participant. Time series

aggregations are carried out automatically,

making all relevant totals available at any

time.

Gas networks

In addition to natural gas networks and

subnets, BelVis EDM GAS manages feeding/

extraction points and transfer stations as

individual instances including their techni-

cal data. Quality zones and districts add

structure to the networks, which are mapped

with their physical properties. The gas state

with temperature, pressure and volume cor-

rection factor, as well as its gross calorifi c

value are considered as time series and as-

signed to the relevant instances. The relevant

value – standard volume or heat quantity – is

therefore instantly available. Where required,

plausibility and substitute value processes

or a compressibility factor correction can

be carried out. Even special situations, like

control or subtraction meters are possible.

Key functions in BelVisIts gas management processes and algo-

rithms make BelVis EDM GAS an ideal sup-

port solution for day-to-day business.

High fl exibility in the application of load

profi le data

BelVis applies the load profi le data from

remote meter reading systems of metered

extraction or feeding points. In the gas sector,

these are customers with registering fl ow

measurement at hourly intervals or measure-

ments at network interconnection and feed-

ing points. BelVis not only works well with all

common RMR systems, but also with meter

service providers.

Powerful plausibility checks

for various verifi cations

Plausibility checks of the acquired data are

indispensable for daily business processes.

BelVis offers a selection of reports for that

particular purpose: The status report verifi es

the completeness of the expected values.

A throughput check monitors minimal and

maximal thresholds. The allocation check de-

termines the plausibility of allocated quanti-

ties based on the quantities of the previous

days and weeks. Even the declaration lists

can be checked for consistency.

Reconciliation calculations

The basis of reconciliation calculations for

standard load profi les and PM metering

points is on the one hand the collected usage

data of retroactive customers, which is col-

lated in regular meter readings and appor-

tioned per day on the basis of standard load

profi les, and on the other hand the allocated

and corrected energy values of metered

customers.

ENERGY MARKET SYSTEM

In addition to the traditional biogas appli-

cations in CHPs for the generation of green

power, the direct marketing to end customers

is increasingly growing in importance. BelVis

supports the producers in vital processes

after RES feeding: Balancing, nomination,

management of biogas balancing groups,

transfer at the virtual trading point. As well

from the viewpoint of the system operator,

BelVis EDM GAS balances biogas feedings

correctly and assignes them to the respective

allocation processes.

Windgas is an exciting topic for the future.

The synthetisation of methane from wind po-

wer (power to gas) is one option for harnes-

sing and storing power spikes from wind

farms, and to utilise the existing gas network

for transporting the energy, and to ultimately

reduce the load on power networks. Once the

requirements for the technical and econo-

mical framework conditions will have been

specifi ed, these balancing rules will also be

made available in BelVis EDM GAS.

Investment security: More than one third

of players in the German gas market have

already implemented the solution.

BelVis EDM GAS is the basic machine for all

players in the gas market. Distribution system

operators, gas traders, transport network or

storage operators – BelVis EDM GAS offers

software modules and customising functions

that allow for targeted alignment for all areas

of application and therefore fulfi l the specifi c

requirements of the respective users:

System operator

BelVis EDM GAS provides a technical and

economic view of the grid districts, including

a parallel visualisation of the various physical

values (operating volume, standard volume,

energy volume). With BelVis EDM GAS, system

operators can handle the entire allocation

process – from the receipt of the load profi les

from RMR to normalisation, re-evaluation and

determination of balance group and classifi ca-

tion group totals, right down to the dispatch of

the allocations to the TSO or balance respon-

sible.

Many standard load profi le processes have

already been integrated (synthetic/analyti-

cal), own coeffi cients possible; analysis and

optimisation of the load profi le process). The

system operator can furthermore maintain and

monitor a network account.

Sales

Very practical from a sales point of view is the

economic overview of the sales region that

can stretch across numerous networks, and the

handling of energy volumes exclusively in kWh.

BelVis EDM GAS supports communication

with system operators and balancing group

managers. Processes for customer segmen-

tation are included, as well as a variety of

options for sales load forecasting (bottom-up

or top-down strategy, short-term forecast and

comparison days method with temperature

infl uence, regression, distribution and duration

curves; additional methods available in BelVis

PRO). Standard load profi les can be considered

down to the individual metering point, and the

monitoring of network usage and reconciliation

billing is optionally available.

Trade and balancing group managers

Forecasts (bottom-up, top-down) generated in

BelVis EDM GAS form the basis for procure-

ment and trade. It also takes on all communica-

tion in accordance to market rules, i.e. the re-

ceipt of allocations and balances from the MGM

and the deliveries of nominations. ‘Shadow

balancing’ and monitoring of the balancing

group totals reported by the TSO are optionally

available. BelVis EDM GAS furthermore offers

the analysis and monitoring of all balancing

accounts in the market zones.
