NEW CLASSICALISM

•The clear distinction between

what defines modern art, with

its constant reinvention, and

the return to classical

painting and sculpture is a

central concern in

postmodernism.

• Chief among the proponents

of this aspect of

postmodernism is the art

KATE MCDOWELL EXPRESSES HER INTERPRETATION OF

THE CLASH BETWEEN THE NATURAL WORLD AND THE

MODERN-DAY ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF

INDUSTRIALIZED SOCIETY.

•It is expressly involved

in deconstruction of what

makes a work of art,

"art".

•Many conceptual works

take the position that

art is created by the

viewer viewing an object

or act as art, not from

the intrinsic qualities

of the work itself.

EXAMPLE OF

MODERN ARCHITECTURE

•The idea of

Postmodernism

in architecture began

as a response to the

perceived blandness

and failed Utopianism

of the Modern

movement.

• Modern Architecture,

was focused on the

pursuit of a perceived

ideal perfection, and

attempted harmony of

form and function, and

dismissal of

"frivolous ornament."

AR

ITE

•Postmodern architecture

rejects the notion of a

'pure' form or 'perfect'

architectonic detail,

• Instead conspicuously

drawing from all methods,

materials, forms and

colors available to

architects.

•"Less is a bore."

CONCEPT OF DECONSTRUCTIVISM

•Characterized by the

intentional

fragmentation,

distortion, and

dislocation of

architectural elements in

designing a building.

•Geometry was to

deconstructivists what

ornament was to

postmodernists

•Complication of geometry

was in turn, applied to the

functional, structural, and

spatial aspects of

deconstructivist buildings

INFLUENCE ON POLITICS

PO

ICS

•Situations which are

considered political in

nature can not be

adequately discussed in

traditional realist and

liberal approaches

•People resist realist

concepts of power which

is repressive

• The power in effect here

is not that

of oppression,

• The power is

of cultural and social
