1 ABOUT ROME
Rome is known in the worldwide as the Eternal City for its unique history of 2800 years. Today
Rome is one of the most visited places in the world thanks to its glorious monumentality and its
religious and cultural importance.
A visit to Rome will allow you to discover the several historical layers that have built this
beautiful city through the centuries; from the remains of the Roman Empire, through the
Medieval, Renaissance periods up to the modern day architecture that dots the city throughout.
The "Eternal city" is not only represented by its masterpieces of art, breath-taking architecture,
monuments and museums but also by its typical streets and alleyways where one can discover
traits of Italian lifestyle, tradition and culture.
I suggest you to visit St Peter Church and climb its famous cupola, to visit Vatican Museum with
Sistine Chapel realized by Michelangelo and the four rooms of Raffaello.
The centre of Rome is full of historical monuments. You can see the Colosseo, Piazza Navona,
Fontana di Trevi, Pantheon, Castel Sant’Angelo and much more.
Rome has excellent shopping opportunities of all kinds. You also get some big department
stores, outlets and shopping centres. Main shopping areas include Via del Corso, Via Condotti,
Via Cola di Rienzo and the surrounding streets.
October is one of the best months to visit Rome, the temperatures are warm (about 22°) and
the city hosts the richest of event’s calendars. The nightlife in Rome is very amusing. You can get
into one of the numerous bars, pubs, clubs with live music, theatres or you can spend the
evening on one of the many piazzas or take a leisurely stroll down one of the characteristic
streets to experience a splendid Rome by night.
You can find further information on the official tourist website for Rome. You can see here the
map of the center of Rome.
2 PRACTICAL INFORMATION
2.1 Airports
Rome has two international airports:
Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport is located in Fiumicino, out of the southwest side of
the city, 35 km from Rome’s historic city center. The airport has daily connections with
every major international city;
Rome Ciampino Airport (Giovanni Battista Pastine Airport) is located in Ciampino, out of
the southeast side of the city, 12.0 km from Rome’s historical center. The airport is a hub of
many low-cost Airlines.
Both are 30-40 minutes of taxi/car rental with driver or 20-40 minutes of shuttle train away
from the city central station.
2.2 Taxi fixed price to/form Airports
Taxi from airports to the center of Rome has a fixed cost, by law.
Taxi from Ciampino Airport to Center of Rome (within the Aurelian Walls) costs a fixed
price of 30 Euro, inclusive of all extra charges. Other specific fixed fares from Ciampino
Airport, inclusive of all extra charges, to other destinations are:
o Tiburtina Station: € 35.00
o Ostiense Station: € 30.00
o Fiumicino Airport: € 50.00
Taxi from Fiumicino Airport to Center of Rome (within the Aurelian Walls) costs a fixed
price of 48 Euro , inclusive of all extra charges. Other specific fixed fares from Fiumicino
Airport, inclusive of all extra charges, to other destinations are:
o Ciampino Airport: € 50.00
o Tiburtina Station: € 55.00
o Ostiense Station: € 45.00
Fixed prices indicated are per taxi with maximum four people.
For taxi journeys to other places around the city, fares are calculated using the taximeter from
the point of departure, with fares varying according to the distance travelled.
2.3 Car rental with driver fixed price to/from Airport
The following rates have been agreed for car rental with driver: Sedan (Mercedes):

2.4 Trains to/form Fiumicino Airport
In Fiumicino Airport there is also a railway station with two different services. The Roma Termini
Station-Fiumicino Airport non-stop service takes about 30 minutes to reach airport/Rome
without intermediate stops.
The Fiumicino-Fara Sabina line (FM1) stops in some of the main Rome railway stations
(Tiburtina, Tuscolana, Ostiense, Trastevere).
All Alitalia passengers traveling between Fiumicino Airport and Rome can take the Alitalia Bus
that is available to all Alitalia passengers arriving or departing. Alitalia provides nonstop
transportation to Termini Station and to select locations in Rome City. You may reserve the
service on alitalia.com.
For further information contact P.I.T, the Tourist Information Point of Rome, inside the airport.
2.5 Trains
Rome has a central train station called Roma Termini, located in the city center. From that,
most trains leave to all destinations.
Another main station is Roma Tiburtina, from here several other important trains leave to all
destinations.
Timetables and information may be found calling the company Trenitalia by phone
([+39]892021) or better on the Trenitalia website.
2.6 Bus and subway
Due to the lot of archaeological findings, Rome has only two underground railways called Metro.
The two lines are called simply A and B and most of the public transport is on the ground
surface.
There is an extension of metro line B, called B1 that starts at Bologna and finishes at Conca
d’Oro. The two stops in-between are called Sant’Agnese-Annibaliano and Libia.
It is important to note that both line B and line B1 start at Laurentina, but that some trains after
the Bologna stop veer off towards Conca d’Oro and some continue towards the end of the
original line B, Rebibbia. Therefore, who need to go to Rome’s second railway station Tiburtina
or who, e.g. have to travel to the Ponte Mammolo stop in order to take the bus to visit Tivoli,
must make sure that the final destination Rebibbia (and not Conca d’Oro) is written on the train.
For both line (A and B), trains run approximately every 4-10 minutes, from 5:30 am until 11:30
pm every day (until 1:30 am on Fridays and Saturdays nights).
The ground (bus) and underground public transport service is given by the public company
called ATAC.
The tickets can be purchased at vending machines or kiosks inside metro stations and at
nearly every newspaper shop and tobacco shop.
There are different ticket types available:
BIT - Integrated Time Ticket: 1,5 euro for 75 minutes from the initial validation with only
one metro ride (BIT ticket)
BIG - Integrated Daily Ticket: 6,00 Euro until midnight (24.00) of the day of its validation
and for an unrestricted number of journeys.
BTI - Integrated Tourist Ticket: 16,50 euro for 3 days from the date indicated by the
ticket holder and for an unrestricted number of journeys.
CIS- Integrated Weekly Ticket: 24,00 euro for 7 days from the date indicated by the
ticket holder and for an unrestricted number of journeys
In order for it to be valid, you must validate your ticket on the first day of use.
2.7 Taxi
In Rome there are several private Taxi companies.
The suggested company names, phone numbers and websites are:
- Radio Taxi Samarcanda: to reserve a taxi, please call [+39] 065551
- Radio Taxi 3570: to reserve a taxi, please call [+39] 063570
- Pronto Taxi 6645: to reserve a taxi, please call [+39] 066645
Please note that every Samarcanda taxi can be paid by credit card, for the other taxi companies
you have to specify that you will pay with credit card.
2.8 Electricity & electronics
Electricity in Italy is 220 volts, 50 cycles alternating current (AC).
Voltage converters might not be always easy to find in Italy, if you think you will need one, I
suggest you to get it before you leave home.
2.9 Time zone
The Rome time zone is UMT/GMT+1 hour
3 CURRENCY, EXCHANGE & CREDIT CARDS
In Italy, the official currency is the Euro (€), it is in many other European countries.
You can exchange your money at every bank (from about 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 3:00
to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday) although you have to pay a commission to exchange cash,
usually about 5 Euro.
You can also change your money for Euro at most Italian Post offices (from 8:30 to 13:50 from
Monday to Friday, on Saturdays from 8:30 to 12:00), with lower commission.
You can also access to cash abroad at a local ATM (Automatic Teller Machines, in Italy known as
Bancomat), using a debit or credit card. Credit card is the most versatile, giving you access to
your money at both ATM and inside banks. Major establishments accept credit cards but you
should contact your bank to see what surcharges they place on foreign currency purchases. Visa
and MasterCard charge a processing fee on international transactions.
