PRACTICAL WORKSHOP Typography – American Psycho
BRIEF 1. Examine the typographical elements of ‘Patrick Bateman’s’ business card and recreate it as close as you can. Now duplicate it, using your details. Make sure that the sizing, spacing and overall design match. P.T.O. for an example.
2. Now construct another typographic based business card; without using logos, symbols. This time, choose any font’s you wish and experiment with the layout, spacing, size and colour. OBJECTIVES The learners will: • Identify and deconstruct a source of
typographic design from pop-culture. • Analyse the contextual authority of
different typefaces. • Develop their research and visual
analysis skills. • Evaluate the strength and influence
typography has on the design. EVIDENCE • 3.5” x 2” mock business cards design
in either Photoshop or Illustrator. • Annotated research & experiments.
STRETCH & CHALLENGE Start experimenting with the structure of font; investigate its potential in being adapted and modified to form other design elements. Build upon this by researching into ‘monograms’.
BUSINESS CARDS
With today’s printing technology, creating luxury and graphical based business cards is easy. However, a good typographical design can be more commanding and striking.
TYPOGRAPHY DESIGN IS Not just about the font you select, it is about the entire visual arrangement of the lettering and its suitability to the requirements of the brief.
About the size, composition and colour all govern the visual appearance and reading of your information.
About the subtle, yet challenging art of arranging type, which compliments the copy and does not distract or make the reading and interpretation a challenge.
A good font will stand the testament of time; some fonts that you use, or see on a daily basis, may well have been created decades if not centuries ago. GARAMOND is one such font.
