A PRECAST CONCRETE RETAINING WALL SYSTEM DESIGNED TO MEET DEMAND FOR MINIMALEXCAVATION REQUIREMENTS

LOCATION: Leslie Elgin - Richmond Hill, ONDIMENSIONS: 6.1m (20ft) tall, 330m (1083ft) long, 1394m2 (15,000ft2) face areaCLIENT / OWNER: Leslie Elgin Developments Inc.DESIGNER: Engineered Earth SolutionsCONTRACTOR: TACC ConstructionMANUFACTURER: DECAST Ltd.

CASE STUDY

• Wall Face 1.22m x 2.44m (4′ x 8′)

• Wall Height 1.22m to 12.20m (4′ to 40′)

• Stem Length 1.83m to 6.10m (6′ to 20′)

• Traffic Barrier 0.91m or 1.07m (3′ or 3.5’)

DECAST is now offering a new precast retaining wall system that reduces excavation requirements (typically 30% less than conventional RSS walls), uses native backfill instead of expensive granular, temporary shoring is not needed and steel straps or geogrid are not required. Additionally, there is a crash-tested, traffic barrier option that provides a finished retaining wall with the barrier in place.

In 2017, a new 73 hectare community called Richlands started to be developed in the Town of Richmond Hill, one of Canada’s fastest-growing communities seeing not only a dynamic surge in population but finance and industry as well. Not only is Richmond Hill growing, they are leading the way by being the first municipality in Ontario to install the Gravix Precast Wall System.

A bridge, retaining walls and traffic barriers were necessary to provide access to the new Richlands community. TACC Construction went with high quality and efficiency when they installed DECAST's precast bridge system (DE-SPAN) with precast footings and the Gravix system. 330m of Gravix retaining wall (369 units) were installed with sections that included the integrated traffic barrier option (103 units), this resulted in a maximum wall height of 6.1m. The development and house building phases could continue on through winter due to the rapid and efficient Gravix process.

LOCATION: Garin Reservoir - Hayward, CADIMENSIONS: 4.1m (13.5ft) tall, 66m (218ft) long, 205m2 (2,210ft2) face areaCLIENT / OWNER: City of Haywood Public WorksDESIGNER: Engineered Earth SolutionsCONTRACTOR: Hendricks Construction CompanyMANUFACTURER: Jensen Precast

CASE STUDY

Garin Reservoir was a Public Works project for the city of Hayward. The site consisted of a single 1,900,000 L water tank needing to be expanded to two water tanks. The additional, new tank’s location required 205m2 (2,210ft2) retaining wall and was originally bid as a concrete crib retaining wall.

Jensen Precast proposed to provide Gravix on the project through a value engineering approach. Gravix proved to be the more economical and cost effective solution on the project. By using slot construction to install the Gravix wall and limit the excavation depth, an existing radio tower and building were able to stay in place without the need for temporary shoring. By going with the Gravix option, the City of Hayward was given a $250,000 USD credit on the project.

LOCATION: Windy Hill - Marietta, GADIMENSIONS: 7.3m (24ft) tall, 208m (682ft) long, 1093m2 (11,760ft2) face areaCLIENT / OWNER: Cobb County DOTDESIGNER: Engineered Earth SolutionsCONTRACTOR: CMES Inc.MANUFACTURER: Peidmont Precast

CASE STUDY

Cobb County DOT is working in partnership with the Cumberland Community Improvement District on a number of projects to improve the Cumberland area roadways. One project was to realign the intersection at Windy Hill Rd and Interstate North Parkway. A retaining wall with traffic barrier was required and an MSE wall was specified. However, in order to install the MSE reinforcement required, two power poles needed to be removed.

CMES in Norcross, GA was awarded the project by Cobb County Department of Transportation (DOT). They immediately started exploring retaining wall systems that didn’t require the power poles to be removed. The Gravix Precast Wall System was chosen because of the minimum excavation required (typically 50% of wall height) and the slot construction method. The Gravix slot construction method enables a contractor to install the units into a slope or safe back cut. This can eliminate temporary shoring and help work around existing utilities. These advantages allowed the power poles to stay in place reducing construction time and cost. CMES was also pleased to learn that the Gravix retaining wall could be backfilled with the existing soils on site, not requiring the import of select backfill. Also, the portion of the retaining wall along the roadway made use of the Mash TL-4 integrated traffic barrier.

LOCATION: Oakwood Medical - Gainesville, GADIMENSIONS: 6.1m (20ft) tall, 654m (178ft) long, 187m2 (2,016ft2) face areaCLIENT / OWNER: Oakwood Medical ArtsDESIGNER: Engineered Earth SolutionsCONTRACTOR: Global StabilityMANUFACTURER: Piedmont Precast

CASE STUDY

The Gravix Retaining Wall System is designed for highway, heavy rail, and large commercial use. Oakwood Medical, a private medical facility constructed near the University of North Georgia - Gainesville Campus, is the location of the first Gravix retaining wall. This cut wall needed to have a limited footprint depth due to an existing road on top. The completed wall was backfilled with on site soils and at the initial request of the Georgia Department of Transportation, has been survey monitored since initial construction completion.

To date, the 6.1m (20ft) tall retaining wall has shown negligible movement and continues to perform well for its intended earth retention of supporting the adjacent Old Oakwood Road. Global Stability from Marietta, GA, was responsible for the installation of the Gravix retaining wall. Having no prior experience with the Gravix system, Global Stability completed the project in 15 working days. The three man crew quickly learned to place Gravix units directly from the truck onto the retaining wall. This saved time and coordination as well as preserved the limited working area.

LOCATION: Nashville Heights - Vaughan, ONDIMENSIONS: 2.4m (8ft) tall, 29m (96ft) long, 43m2 (460ft2) face areaCLIENT / OWNER: Nashville Developments Inc.DESIGNER: Engineered Earth SolutionsCONTRACTOR: TACC ConstructionMANUFACTURER: DECAST Ltd.

CASE STUDY

Nashville Heights is located within the area identified for the extension of Highway 427 and is becoming a transit supportive, mixed-use community for approximately 8000 people, 2625 residential dwelling units and approximately 700 jobs.

In 2018, a new access road was required for the 185 acre subdivision in Vaughan, Ontario. A modular precast concrete bridge and culvert system was installed with precast footings to create the access. Gravix was used as wingwalls for this bridge and culvert. 24 pieces were installed, 6 at each corner. In addition to supporting the road loads from above, the walls would form inlet and outlet structures to funnel potential flows and provide scour resistance.

DECAST manufactured all components weeks in advance and delivered the precast elements exactly when the contractor required them. The precast footings, modular bridge spans and Gravix wingwalls were installed in 2 weeks.
