• The first professional artist in Estonia was Johann Köler ( 1826-1899 )

• In 1919 Premium School of Art called Pallas was founded in Tartu

• Johann Köler was a leader of the Estonian national awakening and a painter.

• He was known by his portaiture andby his landscape paintings.

• His most notable pictures depict the Estonian rural life in the second half of the 19th century.

• One of the most outstanding achievements in Estonian literature is "Kalevipoeg".

• The most remarkable writers of the young generation are Andrus Kivirähk, Karl-Martin Sinijärv and Peeter Sauter.
