PNG is an advance upon GIF as an image-file format It does not require a patent license.

.JIFGraphics interchange format

It is unsuitable for reproducing photographs due to its colour limitations.

It is well-suited for simplerimages such as graphics or logos with solid areas of colour.

.JPGMost common image file format

Used to compress photographic images.

.WMFWindows Metafile

Is a vector format, whereas JPEG And BMP files are raster formats. Rather than being encoded as a series of pixels a metafile is a set of mathematical commands that can then be extrapolated to an image. This gives the format an advantage when producing complex curves or sharp borders and also means that the image can be expanded to any size without loss of quality.
