Data Collection

Data Collection

Set-up, establishing controls (i.e. connecting to satellites), driving the levee at the riverside toe and on the crown, and system shutdown.

Details: Time: About 3.5 hours

Length of levee reach: Approximately 8 miles of levee (1 run on crown and 1 along riverside toe)

Average Travel Speed: Approx. 20 mph

Post-Processing the Data

Compiling, scanning through digital information, interpolating missing data, extraction, and noting/logging deficiencies along the levee

Details: Length: Approximately 2 mile reach

Time: Approximately 4-5 hours for the 2 mile reach

Tools/tricks: Reconciling the data, auto-populating log for large trees, floodwalls, cutting cross-sections, and creating models

Summary (in terms of Periodic Inspection)

Challenges

Cannot capture certain items i.e. burrows along the toe, locations with limited access, deficiencies on steep slope, etc.

What worked well

Capturing the following types of deficiencies: vegetation, encroachments, and measurements (models/cross-sections).

Advantages

Time - (could capture up to 12-20 miles per day)

Safety - lowered risk of injury

Data can be viewed and assessed by multiple people at different times

Revisiting site conditions without field visit
