Lithography Lasser printing

Offset lithography

Lithography

• Lithography was invented in the 1798 by a German Aloys Senefelder. It was popular in the 1890s with colour prints by a few artists for example Pierre Bonnard.

Advantages and disadvantages of lithography

Advantages • An advantage of lithography can be a very fast

way of printing. It is also a unique printing technique.

Disadvantages • A disadvantage is that the printing is not high

quality. And is very time consuming.

Offset lithography

• Offset lithography is a huge printing technique that is found in factory's. It is very expensive and it is a very big process.

Advantages and disadvantages of offset lithography

Advantages• The advantages of offset lithography are it is

cheap if use it in bulk. Can produce millions of copy's per day.

Disadvantages • The disadvantages of offset lithography is very

loud in the factory's and you cant produce it at home.

Lino printing

• Lino printing is a handmade technique that can be used to make personal or unique cards

• birthday cards• get well soon cards • Birthday invitations• Album covers• You don’t need a factory you can create one at

home.

Advantages and disadvantages of lino printing

Advantages• It is a cheap and easy process. after making a lino

cut you will have a unique print that no one else has it is also good for making a handful of copy's.

Disadvantages • If you make a mistake while cutting the lino you will

have to start the whole process again. if you were making a lot of copies it would not be ideal to use lino printing because it would take along time to create.

Making a lino print

• Drawing – we are designing a horror film poster and exploring different printing methods. We were doing lino cutting on Friday. so then we were asked to draw an image that we would be able to use as part of our horror poster. We both looked on Google images for inspiration and we decided on a knife and a cross, so then we drew on a piece of paper the knife and cross that we was inspired by.

tracing

• Tracing – when we got to our lino cutting lesson we watched a video on YouTube of someone making a lino cutting and went through health and safety for example to cut away from your hand as the lino cutter is very dangerous, we then got tracing paper.

transferring

• Transferring the tracing - I stuck sellotape to the tracing paper onto the piece of paper that we drew our picture on. I drew steadily with a soft pencil so that the lines were not harsh and rip through the tracing paper. I then turned the tracing paper over and stuck it with sellotape on a lino cut then I scribbled over the traced lines with a hard pencil which made the lines of the drawing appear on the lino cut after I removed the tracing paper.

Cutting a lino

• Making a lino cut – I got a v shaped lino cutter and made sure I cut away from my hand to make sure I did not hurt myself and follow the health and safety regulations, I used the v shaped lino cutter because I had thin lines, if I had thick lines or wanted to cut away a lot of lino then I would have used a u shaped lino cutter. I cut away the lines carefully to make sure I did not cut away incorrect lines.

Final picture

• Making the final picture – I put some water based ink onto a canvas and rolled a roller on top making sure the ink was spread evenly around. After I rolled the roller onto the lino cut and made sure there was not too much ink as it would go into the lines so the picture would not print .I carefully placed a piece of paper on the inked lino cutting and pressed it down with a spoon, so the ink would not smudge. Lastly I carefully lifted the piece of paper slowly off the lino cut and left it to dry on the drying rack.

Laser printing

• Laser printing is a printer that focuses a laser beam to form images that are transferred onto paper electronically. A advantage of laser printing is you can make a lot of copies but a disadvantage of it is it would take a long time to print a lot of copies.

Advantages and disadvantages of laser printing

Advantages• It is Quick and affordable in a home. You can

make multiple copy's.• Disadvantages • It only produces standard sizes. It is also not

the best quality. Ink cartridges cost a lot of money so it is not good for a lot of copy's.
