In the last quarter of the 18th century

huge number of Buddhist Rakhains of

Arakan escaped the atrocities of the

Burmese king to this district and

settled at Khepupara & Kuakata of

Kalapara upazilla. Many of them also

settled at Rangabali and Galachipa

upazillas. Since then, settlement of

Rakhains began to grow in this region.

Finally, the modern town was

established in 1969.
