Words pictures created by poets are called Images.

The word image is derived from the word imago which means similarity. It can be any sense perception expressed in language

VISUAL IMAGES (EYES)

AUDITORY IMAGES (EAR)

OLFACTORY IMAGES (SMELL)

TACTILE IMAGES (TOUCH)

GUSTATORY IMAGES (TASTE)

VISUAL IMAGE

Visual images are the most common in poetry, as it is the important sense amoung our five senses.

Example :

“Beaded bubbles winking at the brim” { keats}

AUDITORY IMAGES

A mental image that is similar to an auditory perception

Example :

“The voice is so thrilling never heard

In spring time of cuckood bird,

Breaking the silence of the seas,

Amoung the farthest Hebrides…{wordsworth}

OLFACTORY IMAGES

Images created of the sense of smell

Example :

After Apple-Picking - Essence of winter sleep in on the night, the scent of apples

TACTILE IMAGES

Tactile imagery appeals to the sense of touch. 

Example :

I fall upon the thorns of life , Bleed { shelly}

GUSTATORY IMAGES

Gustatory imagery pertains to the sense of taste.

Example :

The rich, sweet, sugary taste of chocolate ran over his taste buds as he chewed and swallowed the whole dessert in less than ten seconds”.
