The present progressive tense & past progressive tense

Se usa para describir UNA ACCION EN PROGRESO

(an action happening RIGHT NOW in the present progressive, an action AS IT WAS OCCURING using the past progressive (imperfect)

Para formar el PRESENTE PROGRESIVO: [ forma de ESTAR + gerundio]

Para formar el GERUNDIO:(la palabra que significa “---ING”)

a) se quita la terminación (-AR,-IR, -ER) del infinitivo

b) verbos –AR:añade –Ando al raíz

Ej. bailar→ BAILANDO → dancing estudiar→ ESTUDIANDO→ studying

GERUNDIOS (gerunds)

b)Verbos –IR, -ER; añade IEndo al raízEj. comer→ COMIENDO→ eating saliendo→SALIENDO→ leaving

To put an action action in progress in the past (Past progressive):

Use the imperfect tense of estarwith the ando,iendo,yendo forms.

Vosotros estabais poniendo los adornos en el árbol. You all (familiar en españa) were putting ornaments on the tree.

Ellos estaban dando besos y abrazos a todos los huéspedes. They were giving hugs and kisses to all the guests.

Ejemplos del pasado progresivo

Past progressive with

mientras (imperfect) and cuando.

• Mientras-You will stay in the imperfect tense while describing two ongoing events which were taking place.

• El Señor Murray estaba durmiendo mientras ella comía (imperfect) las habichuelas coloradas. Mr. Murray was sleeping while she was eating (imperfect) the red beans.

Past progressive with mientras and cuando (pretérito).

• Cuando- You will switch to the preterite when using cuando to describe something that interrupted an action that was in progress.

• El Señor Lander estaba cocinando la cena cuando la cocina prendió fuego.

• Mr. Lander was cooking dinner when the kitchen caught (preterite) on fire.
